Members chisa Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 make your guitar sound its with distortion, except tone knob on guitar all the way down????? i just got a big muff-- and im amazed at how how close i get to the same sound (of big muff) with no pedal at all--- just by turning tone knob(on guitar, not on pedal) all the way down and putting amp distortion-- http://www.zshare.net/audio/1111416840505214/ first part is with big muff, than at around 2:07 is amp distortion+tone knob backed all the way down also please excuse crappy playing that's rubbish, my muff has a massive range of sounds, from all out fuzz fest to dark muff goodness. the tone control is one of the most versatile i have heard extremely dark to ridiculously bright. great pedal, great price IMO:thu: there is also the signal breakup which you get with the sustain turned down which i love and can't get on just an amp.

Just mod the reissue muff tone stack to Ram Head specs, and bypass the transsistor emmiter resistors. The other footswitch is for the emmiter mod and the pot is a mid sweep, which gives it more clairity. Its the one on the right:The one on the left is a 1978 IC big muff, which I modded for true bypass. It sounds different from most Muff's as well. Its a little more grainy, and the tonestack bypass boosts the mids and a little presence. It sounds huge.Take some time to get to know you're Muff. They're awesome pedals and there are loads of mods out there to get you what you want. Ask Skreddy, he's the Muff expert. Jack Orman as well.

Members luke978 Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 You can find old beat up reissue Muffs for cheap. I got mine for $30. The parts for the mod were less than $20. Members Still.ill Posted April 27, 2008 Author Members Posted April 27, 2008 well is there any way for my lbm to get this tone i tried his settings but they didn't work for me
Members skr3ddy Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 Well, I was gonna say, when I heard your clips, that the amp sounds like a solidstate with an 8" speaker. Turns out I was right, and that's the first thing I'd look into changing. Like I said; everything sounds pretty much alike through that thing.

Members Chug Norris Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 Pumpkins was muff into a big marshall on the first few albums, if you aren't pumping enough air and getting the pedal-to-pre-amp gain set properly it won't sound right.
Members LesPaulCustom79 Posted April 28, 2008 Members Posted April 28, 2008 Old 70's & 80's Big Muffs put out a distinct square wave form distortion that you cannot get by just using an amp. I guess the modded new Big Muff's are similar but I am not familiar with them. Easier to hit a switch on a pedal.
Members Still.ill Posted April 29, 2008 Author Members Posted April 29, 2008 and getting the pedal-to-pre-amp gain set properly it won't sound right. you mean like instead of a pedal going just a clean amp, the muff going into a slightly dirty amp... but you'd need a tube amp for this right... because muff into distorted channel on my cube sounds like crap
