Members dopey1978 Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 I'm ready to just give up on my bass rig, cause I just can't get a bass fuzz that I'm happy with. I'm looking for something thick, but that can also retain some of the clarity of the clean signal - think (if you've heard of them) Karp, or Big Business, or even Death From Above 1979 sort of bass fuzzes. Here's just a few that I've tried: I'm running a J-Bass thru a bunch of pedals, and into a Yorkville combo. This is a bedroom setup only, so something that's good at lower volumes would be sweet. Any suggestions?
Members Folky_Grunge Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 Try a Superfuzz (or a clone). That gets a cool sound with a bass (like the bass riff in "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys).

Here's just a few that I've tried:I am not familliar with the bands you listed however..An old bass player I jammed with back in college was fond of the Boss Bass Overdrive. I do not know if the tones you listed are similar to Muse's "Hysteria," but with his J-Bass and Rick, it delivered that fuzzed tone in spades.
Members CicadaSilence Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 I hear good things about the Colorsound Tone Bender, the Malekko B:Assmaster, and the ZVex Woolly Mammoth. Those are all pretty pricey, so if you're looking for a budget fuzz, I'd suggest a Zoom Ultra Fuzz. I use one, and it's pretty close to my ideal fuzz. I can still hear my notes, but they're agressive and snarly. I hear a bit of perceived low end loss, but I think it's more an increased emphasis on mid and high frequencies as opposed to actual low end drop out. I'm still keeping an ear out for good bass fuzzes, but I'm pretty happy with my Zoom. I really wish there was DFA1979 fuzz in a box, but the secret to his sound is driving solid state amps to the point of meltdown. On the other hand, I kind of like that it's not a pedal. Keeps it sacred, sorta.
Members bedtime Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 try a pedal with a {censored}ing blend knob. jeez
Members Malekko Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 Jared from Big Business uses a B:ASSMASTER (very well i may add). (sorry for the self promotion) I'm ready to just give up on my bass rig, cause I just can't get a bass fuzz that I'm happy with. Members lonerstoenr Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 Pm guttermouth on this forum, he makes the best bass fuzz out there.
Members kismet78 Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 +1 on the B:ASSMASTER. Blend knob for the win!
Members Evoken13 Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 Prescription Electronics Depth Charge.....Excellent bass fuzz w/blend control.....if you can find one.Sold mine 2 years ago

Members cdawzrd Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 On the cheaper side, I get great results with a boss FZ-3 in an external blend loop. Outside the loop it drops a little low end but its not terrible.

Members Urinate Forever Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 Jared from Big Business uses a B:ASSMASTER (very well i may add). (sorry for the self promotion) I was actually going to say that.
Members Coma Larkin Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 I also think a big part of those bands' bass tone is sheer volume. Can you do that at bedroom levels?
Members kismet78 Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 I also think a big part of those bands' bass tone is sheer volume. Can you do that at bedroom levels? Nope. You really need to be inducing bowel movements at volume.
Members Orwell Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 ZVex Wooly Mammoth or a clone of it FTW! I've also heard that the dude from DFA1979 used one and they had great bass fuzz tones.
Members jorhay1 Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 Super Fuzz or CloneMaestro Brass Master or clone (Malekko B:Assmaster) the guyatone (or Boss FZ3) would be cool for cheap provided that you blend in some of the original signal
Members orangesix Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 :thu:im pretty sure DFA1979 did NOT use a wooly mammoth.anyhow a guy i used to jam with had a Depth Charge and its pretty much amazing.
Members orangesix Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 id like one of the devi ever bass fuzz's. what ar ethey gonna be called?
Members NoirAbattoir Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 How about a USA muff modded with a mid knob? I loved the usa muff on bass when I tried it.
Members bob, just bob Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 I've been using a big muff on bass. I modded it to have LEDs in the first clipping section, which gives it more low end.
Members spentron Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 You might want to try a TS/SD-1 type OD, clean boosted to insane levels until the clean signal portion beomes audible. This trick also works with Suprazombie I make . As well as MixMuffMod, subzombie has plenty of bass, and has been used on some studio recordings.... plenty of generic comments apply to using both mine and other's pedals though. An EQ (or even a low-pass filter for fizz control) helps overcome some of the limitations of avail. pedals. But so many dist. pedals are almost just big EQs with generic distortion stuck in, avoid that if you want your own EQ, or choose one for its EQ and stack it with a fuzz you actually like.
Members Ultradust Posted April 27, 2008 Members Posted April 27, 2008 I have 3 that give me what I want in different styles, and I love them all:Frantone Cream Puff: Yes, it is like a Muff, but with massively boosted low end that can be good on bass as well. Very smooth, very huge, although heaps more bass compared to the bypassed signal. Great on chords above the 7th fret. too.Moollon Bass Drive: Forget the fact that I work for Moollon, I bought this pedal at full price years ago and it is the only bass overdrive that I've been able to keep on my board. Although not as good on "Mr. Clean" Trace Elliot combos, it sounds huge on Ampeg SVTs and a few Ashdowns I've gigged it with. Excellent low freq retention with just enough push to drive an amp head.Prescription Electronics Depth Charge: I sold my Zvex Wooly Mammoth and picked one up in its stead...will go from heavy overdrive to honking fuzz, the ingenious blend knob is the secret to the magic. Hard to find yet highly recommended.
