Members Burstbucker
I recently ended up with a MI Audio Crunch Box pedal in a trade deal, it's the newest version with the internal Presence adjustment BTW. I tried this pedal through a '63 Fender Bassman and it was less then impressive but it really shines when I use it with my 1970s silverface Fender Twin Reverb. I almost get the impression that they designed this pedal to work well with this type of amp. I'll bet that a lot of pedals that get a bad rap might sound a lot better when used with an appropriate amp with the settings set just right. Yup. Drive/Fuzz pedals sure are gonna differ a lot depending on amp. I've heard pedals sound incredible through one amp and {censored}ty through another (usually my old single recto, lol). It is certainly overlooked though, you raise a good point.
Members Burstbucker
Yeah, it's kind of like trying to hit a moving target. When you're pretty serious about getting a great tone and you have a bunch of good gear, you find that everything is so interdependant on everything else in the chain. This is where the dreaded option anxiety creeps into the picture and you end up with GAS so severe that you might as well just jump off a bridge or something! Members StratStevo
That's why I keep pedals that don't really blow me away, in a couple of weeks I will swap out amps and fiddles.....the sky's will part and that Digitech pedal ain't so bad after all
Members ads
i've found the crunchbox works best thru a really clean channel. the internal trim helps to adjust the pedal to suit different amps which is a great feature
Members Belt
Still no beating a good tube amp. Mine is one clean channel. I boost everything in the front.
Members Burstbucker
I've often heard that the Fender Twin Reverb is just about one of the most unforgiving amps as far as what pedals will work with it. I find that it's an amp that's almost Hi-Fi in that it'll bring out more detail then most other amps. If I use a Fuzzface for example, with my '63 Bassman or my 1970 Traynor YBA-1 BassMaster, it sounds nice and fat with not a whole lot of crispy high end detail but this same pedal sounds way different when played through my Twin Reverb, more fizzy and not as nice sounding IMHO. But if I put a good dirt pedal like a Fulltone OCD between the Fuzzface and the amp, the Fuzz will sound a lot better, this is because the OCD tames the Twin Reverbs preamp section I guess. I think my JC-120 has the same type of thing going on. I kinda like it though. Im tempted to put a Crunch Box in front of my JC.
