Which Overdrive/clean boost?

This seems to be just about everybodys question

i want to spend less than $150 New

at first i was just thinking a lpb1 by EH for a linear boost, scince then i thought the voodoo labs sparkle drive

im using a xxx and a fender hot rod

the tripple x has too much distortion for my mild overdrive use and my hot rods od sounds like {censored} (as just about every1 would agree)

i was planing on switching out the power amp tubes on the hot rod to something that is clean almost all the way up

what od should i use

Fulltone OCD = Very good overdrive but each note is articulated and mistakes will be noticeable especially in chord riffs. Light picking causes volumn to go down. Heavy picking volumn goes up accordingly. Roll volumn back on guitar = cleaner distortion. If you are sloppy sometimes do not get the OCD.

TS-9 Tubescreamer = Great overdrive, crunchy with good string articulation on chords and good punch. Somewhere between an OCD and a RAT.

Pro Co RAT = For really dirty, narly overdrive-sustain get a vintage RAT or a RAT2 that has been modded with the LM308N chip.

Boss OD-3 = Good, compact, durable overdrive pedal, but not as good as other three in my opinion.

EHX Big Muff Pi = Great distortion-sustain but break too easy.

I'd would have to suggest a Tube Screamer of some kind. If you really want options go with the TS-9DX version or have it modd'd to 808 specs.

Nice, warm, and crunchy IMO and better than a distortion box.

However, if you really like the tone of your amp and don't want any coloration go with the MXR MicroAmp.

I have an MI Audio Blue Boy Deluxe that works well either as a low/medium gain od pedal or set up as a boost (volume up, pedal gain down) to drive an amp that's set on the verge of breakup into a great classic rock crunch, fwiw.

if the tube screamer only makes the tubes distort i dont think i can use it as it wont overdrive my amp too much with the new tubes...they are NOS JAN Philips 7581A

supposedly the cleanest power tubes they make

but you're trying to drive your preamp tubes harder, right?

I really like my maxon od808 the most out of many things I've tried, even had an OCD for a while and while in the higher gain settings I found it better than the od808.... I thought the OD808 did a sweeter mid gain sound and responded nicer when boosting my mesa... :idk: just my 2 cents :)

tubescreamers do cut a bit of bass and have a mid hump so you may not want that :idk:

Mod the eq on the TS. They are probably the most popular pedals to mod. So there are plenty of ideas.

absolutely, I actually really like that bass cut and mid hump, works particularly well with Mesa amps which are dark and loose.... helps tighten it up a bit and bring more focus to the lead tone....

Danelectro Wasabi Overdrive - $99.50. You can get it cheaper elsewhere. It was a great pedal while it was $120, let alone now that it's on clearance. But hurry, they've discontinued it and when they're gone, they're gone. I bought two awhile back and love them.

It's an OD and a clean boost. You can use both seperately. Great features in general, too. The EQ selector gives you four different EQ curves for the pedal that change its whole tonal character. Setting 2 sounds like a TS but smoother, same frequency response in general though. The others have a specific sound, too, and in addition to the four there is a "flat" setting. It also has a Mix control, which lets you dial in a balance of clean/overdrive to give your sound some sparkle.

Not a big fan of the Copperhead, in the clips/videos I've heard on the net, the clean boost worked alright but the distortion side of it sounded pretty grainy and weird. You might like it, but I didn't.

The OCD is more a distortion pedal than an overdrive to me, very high-gain if you're looking for a TS kind of overdrive. Even on LP with the gain around 9:00 it was too much for me.

I would look at a TS clone w/boost built in. Homebrew Power Screamer and T-Rex Moller come to mind.
