Members goth70
If anyone owns the Tonebone classic pedal (NOT the hot British version) I would like to ask you the following? 1. Does it shine at low gain settings? 2. Is the build quality ok? Some people panned its quality on Mus. Friend. 3. Is the tube a cheap sovtek? Does replacing the tube make a difference? 4. Since they have a British version, am I to assume that the classic sounds more like a cranked Fender? Thanks.
Members SoulSerenade
3. Is the tube a cheap sovtek? Does replacing the tube make a difference? The distortion from this pedal is independent of the tube. The tube acts as a preamp for this pedal and the distortion comes from separate circuitry. So I don't think it will make much difference distortion wise.
Members Goldtopper
(Bumping this old thread I found on a search) The distortion from this pedal is independent of the tube. The tube acts as a preamp for this pedal and the distortion comes from separate circuitry. Is that correct? If so, that would imply that it's just like any other solid-state OD box, and that the tube is just there as a gimmick? The FAQ on the Radial website says that changing the tube only changes the sound a little bit, so I have to wonder about this. Anyone know? Members boytbpc
99% of pedals with tubes are gimmicks.
Members Goldtopper
Yea, it would seem that if the tube is just being used as a preamp stage to bring the instrument level signal up before the distortion circuitry, then the tube is not needed... you could use SS for that part of the chain. Is the tube really being "driven" to create the distortion?
Members steinwand
what interests me even more: can the tube be driven by another pedal?
Members Goldtopper
Update: ya know in post #3 where I say that if the tube is just a preaamp, that it could be replaced by solid state? Well, I dont know how new this is, but Tonebone now has a line of pedals called "Bones" which they say: "represent the evolution of the solid state pedal with low-noise 'Tonebone' circuits" with SS versions of the Classic and Hot British.http://www.tonebone.com (scroll down a little) So maybe the tube has nothing to do with the OD part of the circuit at all, and maybe it really is there mostly as a gimmick? Members freeridstylee
If I were to be designing a gimmick I would clearly add a window so you could see the glowing tube. Just saying.
Members ProGuitarShop
FYI: Here is an updated and stripped down version of the Classic. You will see these everywhere after the NAMM show in January. Couldn't get it to embed.
Members peridot1
The easiest way to tell if a tube pedal is a gimmick is to run it direct into a mixer. It leaves no room for doubt.
