Got to play with some neumans today..

Neumann - two "n's" at the end. :)

Neumann has made some incredible microphones over the years, but I certainly like some (and in general, the ones I like are older) better than others...

Which model were you using Weems?

Since you said "overheads" and "sick little mic", I'm going to assume they were KM's. The question then becomes, were they KM56's (tube, vintage, incredible, priced accordingly), KM84's (discontinued, transformers, killer sounding) or KM184's (current production, a bit toppier than the '84's, transformerless, not as cool)... or something else? :)

I knew the pronunciation but not a clue how to spell them.

Not a clue on what model they were. But they were two small condensers.

I didn't even plug in my MXL 603's for the first time to test them out in comparison. But OMG the clarity and pressence these little buggers had! Insane, i don't even want to think about how much they cost. All i kept repeating is NICK DO NOT TOUCH THE DAMN MIC'S. I'M RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERYTHING, I WILL KILL YOU.

Nick being my drummer.

But yeah, not sure on the model. There was a Neumann ribbon mic in the soundbooth i believe as well. This is the studio on campus. How cool! I'll try and snap some pics next time.

We tried to record 8 tracks live with the motu8 pre in garage band, b/c i deleted my hard drive and lost all my other programs. But yeah, for some reason it wouldn't let me track 8 tracks live for some reason. kept getting the "disk speed to slow" message. Do you think that was possibly the program doing that or my computer not being fast enough?

How old is the computer and what are the specs on it? For the most part, any fairly recent computer (newer than three or four years old) should have no problem handling 8 simultaneous recording tracks to a internal HDD - even the C drive - without even breaking a sweat. However, if you're using an external drive to record to, there are potential problems / issues there, especially with USB 2.0 drives. Firewire is generally better for audiop recording, and when recording to an external drive, ideally you want it to have an Oxford chipset.

BTW, Neumann has never made a ribbon mike. ;)

haha, then i don't have the slightest clue then on what kind of mic the other one was. The bigger diaphragm ones..

As far as my mac, its a 2007 MBP. 2.2 GHz core 2 duo, 2 GB ram.

Not a clue why it wasn't letting me run 8 simultaneous tracks.

The setup was

Bass - DI
Guitar 1 - 1x Shure 57
Guitar 2 - 1x Senn e609
Vocals 1 - 1x Shure Beta 58
Drums - Bass drum - Audix something
Snare - sm57
Over heads - 2x nuemann small condenser mic's

And if i played with them. It would give me this message saying "disk speed to slow" or something of that nature. I went through the tips in increasing the ability of Garageband and still it did it. Though i noticed the more gain/heavy signal i sent it the faster this would come up.

Do you think its just Garage band? GB is very limited when doing a full band live.

garageband is a good program and all but it takes up a lot of resources. i've seen it flex computers with just a few tracks when other programs wouldn't have any problems.

Its what i'm thinking.

I'm thinking about loading up Digital Performer and just deleting Garageband. The only thing its good for is quick demo'ing. The effects on there SUCK!

I probably wouldn't delete Garageband. It's cool for what it is, and can be fun for working with "construction kit" type methodologies - doing loop based stuff, quick demos, songwriting, etc... but you're right - it can be a resource hog, and it really isn't in the same league as a full featured sequencer / DAW like DP, PT or Logic.

Weems, what OS are you running? There's been some serious issues with OS 10.5 and audio apps from what I've been hearing.

Leopard. Is taht 10.5? If so. Damn.

Well my motu came with a program, i forgot what its called. But its like a smaller version of DP i believe. Iono. I'm going to load it up and see if there are any changes in the way it runs. I also felt as if GB was laging a bit with the program when tracking. LIke the sequence looked behind what it was actually doing. I don't know.. I hate garage band after tonight.
