Built my own Fuzz Face clone

Ever heard of byoc pedals? I had known of them for a long time, but was always a bit skeptical of my own soldering skills and the quality of a pedal that arrives at your door in pieces. I was admittedly pretty nervous about starting this project. So I started with their simplest design - the Extra Special Vintage Fuzz (a clone of the original Fuzz Face). The step-by-step instructions are relatively easy to follow, even for an electronics noob like me.

I finished building the fuzz pedal on Sunday and was really excited to hear it in action. Honestly, I was pretty nervous it wasn

Cool, thanks guys!

Makis - IIRC, it was $95

Belt - I love other people's fuzz tone, and I'm constantly trying to find it in my rig. So I guess I'm not much of a fuzz guy, but of all the fuzzes I've had - I like this one the best.

Velcroboy - an engineering friend of mine said the same thing - I'll be shortening the leads on both transistors tonight as well.

Lewis - sorry man, I have no means of recording at the moment. And I've never played an OG Fuzz face, so I can't really make the comparison.

Cut two short pieces of that purple wire, then take some pliers and pull the wire out of the middle of them just leaving the insulation. Slide the purple insulation tube over the middle leg of each of the transistors to prevent short circuits.

Great looking fuzz. I built a fuzz face a while back and it turned out well. What FX chain are you running, and what kind of amp? I've found that the fuzzface sounds pretty bad if run into a clean amp.

Thanks tubetonez, I like that tip about the guitar's volume - I will definitely try that out.

Here's where I currently have it in the chain: Guitar du jour> Boss Tuner> HBE Compressor> Fuzz Clone> Vexter Box of Rock> Toadworks Lil Leo > Ibanez TS9DX > Boss Trem> Dunlop Uni-Vibe> Boss Chorus> MXR Phase 90> Rocktron Digi delay> Rocktron Hush> BBE Sonic stomp> Fender DRRI set just on the edge of breakup (so still fairly clean, unless I use a more forceful attack)

Yeah, I like pedals. Like you said, I also noticed this fuzz needs some help from the amp or other pedals. It sounds good in combination with the dirt - the Box of Rock (which is kind of like my "Marshall" sound) gives it way more "balls". I haven't really had a chance to try it out in different spots as I just got it working yesterday, but I figured before the other dirt boxes was a good spot - any recommendations for where else it could go?
