I'm thinking of selling my amp......

....and just buying a Pod X3 live and some nice monitor speakers. I'm sick of constantly trying to find a tone that pleases me with endless combinations of overdrive and dirt pedals. At least with the Pod I have a choice of amps on there and loads of effects to choose from. If this fails then I don't know what......

What do you guys think? Should I do it? I'm just toying with the idea and wanted to get some opinions first.

what amp do you have?

I think the most important buy is the amp, then guitar. Invest on a good amp first.

Cornford Carrera. It is a good amp, but I just can't seem to find a sound out of it that would please me.....

I seem to remember that you loved your amp a couple of months ago... I sure would love a Carrera.

I don't think you should sell your amp. It depends on your situation of course, but nothing beats the feeling of a good amp in my opinion. If you want a POD to mess around with, that's cool, but isn't there any way you could keep your amp and save up for the POD?

Thing is that I do like the gain tone, it's great. But the amp has no footswitch and I can't get really clean sounds by rolling down the volume on the guitar. If I run the amp clean and use a pedal I don't get anywhere that's even close to the amp's distortion. I've tried a lot of pedals but I just can't work with them for some reason.

Maybe I'm just restless for some reason......

I've got a PODxt and a GNX3000 that I use with a pair of monitors and I love the setup. It makes recording easy, quiet practise and night doesn't wake up the kids and there's lots of choice of high quality models. OK not all are great, and the best on the modellers may not be up there with a good tube amp, but there are still some fantastic sounds that can be had and I probably use the POD more than any of my amps / effects.

I wouldn't replace my amps completely with a modeller, but it's definitely a great option to have - and it definitely has some useful advantages over real amps.

Cornford amp to a pod. seriously?

Yeah....... OK, well I'd probably keep the Cornford and use the POD mostly because of the range of sounds that can be had from it.

Won't you probably have more ways to screw around with your tone if you had the POD X3? The combinations will still seem pretty endless.

Good point.

I should go back to just playing straight into my amp again.

I didn't get on with the Carrera at all. The reverb is lovely but I could never find a tone I enjoyed. I hated the Vintage 30 speaker with it, tried it out with other speakers and valve combinations ranging from a Celestion Blue to some Jensen alnicos in partnership with Harma valves and NOS Mullards... nothing. I could never get it how I liked. Like you, I actually liked the gain tone. It was great for my Oasis moments, something simple and cranked but it was utterly awful for clean tones. I sold it on for a little profit and don't miss it one bit.

I'd ditch the amp. That'll give you

What kind of monitors do you use? I'm a home only player so live playing doesn't matter to me.

I've got a pair of Yamaha MSP5's which do a great job and are reasonably priced. In fact I've also got a pair of Behringer MS16's which aren't too much bigger than computer speakers and even they do a perfectly adequate job at room levels. You definitely don't have to spend a lot of money on the monitors because you have a lot of EQing capability within the modellers.

Is portability a concern? (like are you talking a system for jobbing or more of a static situation)

there's the keep both option -- what about running a second amp? maybe something really clean (like a jC - though, in effect I suppose the DI&monitor type setup is really abt the same thing)

You do get nice distortion with the Cornell. I had the older one that went from 10 watts to 3 watts. to be honest, there wasn't a huge change really. For hoem use, I find it easier using pedals for distortion.

The Ashdown Peacemaker 20 has been my surprise of the last year. It's really good for the money. Decentish reverb for the price, channel switching, master volume, not bad speaker, effects loop is good... it's really taken me by surprise. For a bedroom amp, it's close to perfect in my opinion.

It sounds like you're going to keep using the POD. Ever consier buying an Atomic Reactor amp? I tried one out with Guitar Rig and it sounded pretty good. Might be a better option than using monitors. I used monitors with Guitar Rig for a while when I was between countries. I've had an old pair of Silver 5L monitors for three years now. I don't think Silver make monitors now but they were an absolute steal for

Modeling is OK, but I dunno.. I think that after a while you'll want to try a tube-amp again, and be amazed when you hear the difference after having used the POD for some time.

There's just something lacking with modelers.. a little something..

Nothing beats playing thru a good tube amp..

That's the way I feel, anyways.. ymmv :thu:

I have a Pod, it's fun to practice on late at night with headphones and whatnot, but I would never substitute it for an amp. Sell the Cornford, get something else, but don't downgrade to a $200 toybox.

Have you ever tried using the OD channel with the gain set very low then using dirt pedals for OD and other dirt tones? I didn't like using the footswitch on my amp becasue there's a hesitation when going from OD to to clean. I found that I liked the OD w/ the gain on 1-2 better than my clean channel. It's just the right amount of break up that I can control it w/ picking dynamics and using a good boost gets my amps great sounding distortion. I also find that EVERY dirt box sounds better on a low gain OD channel that on a clean channel.

NEVER ditch you amp for a pod. It's okay to get a POD but ALWAYS have a good amp.
