Problem involving my new laptop, vista, my v-amp and the line in/mic input. Help!

Ok so I bought a new laptop yesterday, after setting it up I attempted to plug my v-amp into it thru the mic input at the front. I can get it to record the sound coming thru the v-amp but it won't play in real-time! On my old computer I could plug into the line-in input and just "unmute" the line in and it would play thru my computer fine. There does not seem to be an option for that in Vista tho! Could someone please help! Is there a driver or program I can download to fix this?
