Anybody get Death Cab's new record yet?

I just downloaded it from iTunes and I dig what I hear so far...

I'm not their biggest fan in the world, but I enjoy the albums and saw them once about four years ago. Gibbard's voice comes across really, really well. The breathey falsetto stuff is still exists, but his midrange seems much more powerful than on past albums. The melodies are really creative too...

I also notice it's more guitar centric, kind of a throwback to "The Photo Album", which has always been my favorite. I really love the combination of really long and short songs too; the whole track layout is really dynamic, adventurous.

I think Chris Walla's production has finally come of age too. He's taken his ability to capture a really hi-fidelity "produced" sound and applied it to creating more raw, immediate sounds, like on earlier albums. He always seems to capture a great sense of space, which I really, really envy...

Oh, well...anyone else?

had it for a few weeks now - definitely a good'n

Did you preorder the CD for $25 or did you obtain it through 'alternative' means?

I would have gladly preordered the vinyl, but apparently their label won't let Barsuk release it until the summer :(

I like the first two songs, starts really strongly. Cath... is just great as is long division and your new twin sized bed. I don't really care the rest that much, its a good album but nowhere near as good as Transatlanticism and Plans.

Surprised at the posts so far... I haven't enjoyed a Death Cab album since Transatlanticism.

Not that they're bad, but I think they've veered toward self-parody (and, gasp, adult contemporary!) and gotten fairly boring. Hmm...that sounded way more critical than I meant to sound.

*ducks*

The guitar tones are, in my opinion, the closest I've heard any band of a comparable genre come to perfect for their music. The album is very, very different, and a lot of it seemed boring at first. After a couple listens, however, I'm starting to get into how the album as a whole creates a very distinct feel. And I do respect them so much for trying something new. The guitar work is extremely versatile, but what I'm not completely digging are the lyrics and some of the vocal melodies. I love how the songs, and the album as a whole, are composed in a more progressive fashion.

I'll be seeing them with Rogue Wave on June 9th, so I'm looking forward to how the new stuff sounds live.

I'm still deciding. After driving around listening to it today, my first impression is that it's really good, but it's one of those albums where it will sink in after a lot of listening.

yeah, ive had it for a week.

it was awesome at first but now im kinda on the fence.

I've had it for about 2 weeks, absolutely hated it at first, but the 2nd time through it sounded a little better, still on the fence. I think Pitchfork's review summed it up pretty well.

I'm just jaded because I don't think they've been able to match "We Have the Facts..."
