Members pianorocker
Hello friends, I had started a thread about the dd-7 and it started to get on this topic, so which of the two headline boss digital delays do you favor? I'm leaning towards getting a dd-7, but having second thoughts after what people have been saying about the dd-20 being a better deal. I need regular, analog simulation, reverse, loop, and tap tempo. Which they both have. So which is the BEST at what they do? And which is the BEST deal? Or neither? Thanks, Caleb
Members sbrett
I didn't vote because it depends alot on how you plan to use it. If you don't mind turning a few knobs to get to the different settings then I'd go with the DD-7. If, on the other hand, you'd rather have presets with all that set up then I'd probably go with the DD-20. I recently went to the DD-7 from a Rocktron Xpression rack unit, and one of the reasons is that even though I had presets set up, they rarely sounded the same from venue to venue, and I couldn't easily tweak them on the fly if something didn't sound quite right. With the DD-7 I can make whatever changes I need and tune the sound to whichever stage I'm on at the time.
Members pianorocker
thanks, yeah I definately don't mind the knobs and lack of pinpoint accuracy in exact milliseconds for the delay. I also heard that the reverse on the dd-20 wasn't exactly stellar? I am sure it comes down to mostly preference single vs. double and the small differences, but I'm sure some people could help me make the best choice. Members mueller
basically, if you have room for it, go for the dd-

Members Faldoe
I played a DD-20 once at a store and wasn't too impressed. I have a DD-7 and like it, lol, notice I'm selling it. I use it to loop a lot but a bummer is that you can't stop and resume the loop...I just got a SMMWH off ebay, it's modulated mode sounds better and the reverse is really nice and the muilti tap thing is pretty sick. But if you want a small pedal, good basic stuff - the DD-7's analog mode is pretty nice, and 40 seconds of loop time...get the DD-7 Hey get mine.... But I have a guitar center gift card I got through some promo in the mail so I have a feeling I'll just go there for the 159 price-my gift card... Is the reverse delay good on the dd-7 or not? I'm really interested in it for the reverse, analog, loop, and basic delay functions. I may end up getting an rc-2 as well, but I figure this first. Members Faldoe
The DD-7 Reverse is ok, I've heard better but it's reverse, better than the Marshall Echohead reverse.
Members pianorocker
okay, yeah I'm selling my EHX 16 second delay and foot controller because it's just too complex and I need something more for stage less experimenting. It's a shame though because it is a beautiful pedal

Members pianorocker
Is the reverse on the DD-7 100% wet like the DD-6? good question, I was about to ask the same thing... and I see that the dd-20 is winning in the poll, any specific or even general reasons for this or is this just what everyone has and is satisfied with? Members willburford
I'd go with dd-7. I had a dd-20, sold it. Now I really want the dd-7. Not that I've ever played the dd-7, though. heh
Members Ben Co.
Is the reverse on the DD-7 100% wet like the DD-6? Yes. If you crank the Effect Level, it's 100% wet.
Members pianorocker
other than the dedicated tap tempo attached and ability to see exact milliseconds of delay...what is the benefits of the dd-20? Honestly, I've never needed or had enough time to dial in specific delay times in milliseconds and save them..but that's just me.
Members pianorocker
If I sell some stuff today, I may go to guitar center. Also, I know they by used gear there...anyone know if they pay fair prices? I have a rare boss dc-2 MIJ that I'm just not using enough...but they've been going for like 200-250 on ebay? Members machine gunner
I had a DD20 and now have a DD-7. Feature wise the DD20 has more (and a few pretty useless features IMO), but I honestly think the DD-7 sounds better plus the looper has twice the time and it oscillates really nicely. The DD20 always sounded a bit dull to me for some reason, but the DD-7 sounds more lively/musical to my ears esp. on the analog and modulated modes. And to reiterate, reverse will go 100% wet. Great pedal, love it

I'm leaning to the dd-7, but I'll have to see or keep hearing some input.
Members uz3r
Bump, Im also looking at a new delay. Everyone keeps pointing me to the DD7 and DD20. A lot of people seem to be really keen on the DD7 but its a bummer you have to purchase another pedal to be able to tap the tempo out.

I'm leaning to the dd-7, but I'll have to see or keep hearing some input. What's the price difference? Keep in mind that having 5 presets is like having 5 delay pedals at once (I mean not EXACTLY...but you get the idea). Line 6 Echo Park is another extremely versatile option and you don't need an external pedal to tap the tempo.
Members pianorocker
well a dd-20 new is 249 and a dd-7 is new for 159+like 20 for a tap tempo off a forum member. For me it's the 100% wet reverse that people say, the 40 second looper (I have a dedicated one, but that is very cool too), and I don't need to see exactly how many milliseconds it is delaying. My friend traded his dd-20 for a dd-2 and some other pedal because he said it just wasn't clean or cutting. I heard the line 6 is a great option too. I just want the dd-7 because boss pedals are tanks. I like to STOMP on pedals.

I just want the dd-7 because boss pedals are tanks. I like to STOMP on pedals. Crazy. I bought my DD-20 for around $175 new and just picked up a cheap keyboard sustain pedal so that I could tap tempo while having easy access to switching presets. I personally think that there are a ton of not just uesable but great sounds in it, but you have to be a little patient. There are some neat tricks in the DD-20 that make it more than a delay pedal to me. You can get somewhat tuneable ring mod, chorus, fast Leslie-ish (I wouldn't hesitate to use this instead of an Arion chorus for many applications), and somewhat tuneable flanger. It's not as powerful as many standalone boxes for these effects, but it can do quite a bit as is by saving them as different presets. Plus, warp mode is great for being able to loop short tap tempo'd phrases that you can layer in/out and cut up a little bit if you hold down the pedal for different parts of the repeats. You can also get a lot of mileage by setting up each preset to have a fairly long, if not all the way up. Then, you can layer something with preset 1, switch to preset 2 and layer a bit more to complement the preset 1 layers. When you switch to preset 3, preset 1's layers drop out, and you can add something else that interacts with the preset 2 layers in a different way (e.g., different delay type, tempo, combination with pre-delay effects). I'm sure the DD-7 is a great pedal too, and that units like the Eventide and the Nova Delay probably kill the DD-20 in a lot of areas, but for the price, my DD-20 is powerful enough for me now. Members tremendous
The DD-20 is great because in the digital delay mode you can set the feedback all the way up and get a looper for the time you set the delay. so up to 23 secs. and then using the feedback control you can let the loops degrade while adding up more. then flip it to the next preset and layer again. such a useful pedal. Members TheGareth
I was also thinking of getting a DD-7 as the demos sound pretty good. I like the way that you can have short loops and layer guitar tracks.
