Are there any good Mu-Tron III clones/soundalikes?

I'd like an envelope filter that can get me close to Jerry Garcia's tones on Shakedown Street. I don't really know much about envelope filters, but I've been considering the EMMA Discumbobulator.

I guess the Q-Tron is supposed to sound similar to a Mu-Tron, but I'm not keen on humongous enclosures and silly power supply requirements (sorry, EHX fans :( ).

Any suggestions?

Yeah, I know the new one is a little bit smaller.

I still think it's a bit big for a pedal that I'll only use on special occasions, though. Also, I don't really want pedals that I can't power with my power supply (9v or 12v).

I don't have any suggestions, but I'm pretty bored right now, so I'll tell you guys a story about my experience with a Mu-Tron III.

I went over to a friend of mine's house one day to hang out. While we were talking, he mentioned that his dad found what he thought was a distortion pedal in an abandoned house. He said he didn't know what it was, but it looked old. Then, he offered to let me check it out, because he thought I'd know what it was, I got exited, expecting my friend to show me a rare, vintage fuzz or something, but when he showed it to me, I had no idea what it was. I'd never heard of a Mu-Tron before. I plugged it in and we were both pretty surprised to hear auto-wah instead of distortion. I messed with it for about an hour (the batteries in it ran out), and I thought it was a pretty good sounding pedal. A little later, we got on his computer and did a little research. We found out that some famous people had used this effect, and they were now selling for 300 dollars or more.

I've mentioned this here before, but my band director handed me mine back when I was in high school, and said "I found this in my mom's attic the other day, and I used to use it with my clav." I asked him what it did, and what it was (this was '92/'93ish, and I hadn't been playing long), and he just said "It's an automatic wah wah, sort of...just plug it in and mess with it, I can't explain it".

I still have it, and I've been on a quest lately to find a more convenient substitute for it on my board (it sucks tone horrendously...the gain knob works even when the pedal is off), and I've not found it, yet. I have a Dr. Q and, more recently, a mini Q-tron, as well as a friend's old MXR Envelope Filter that he's loaned me. Other than the Mu-tron, the MXR is my favorite (I can't manage to trade it out of him:mad:). I also have a black Russian Bassballs on loan, but I've not tried it yet, as I may need to fix it first.

It seems like most envelope filters do closer to a automatic wah kind of sound, while the Mu-tron has something happening I usually refer to as "acid residuals". It's a lot trippier, deeper, and more "synth"ish than any of the others. I want the new Q-tron plus, to put a fuzz and delay in the loop of.

Modes 1 and 2 do a good job, and you won't have to pay a fortune for it.

Yeah, I've got one of those actually. It's a fun pedal, but I'm not really digging it for funky tones. I use it mainly for synthy weirdness. Maybe I need to do some more tweaking.

Thanks for the suggestion, CicadaSilence, I'll see if I can check out an AF9 somewhere.

To you guys who know people who randomly find Mutrons:
