OT- Grateful Dead content

I went to see Phil & Friends at the Warfield in San Francisco last night (Phil Lesh was the bassist for the Grateful Dead. His band plays Dead songs). So its a full-on San Francisco Deadhead audience. A clean-cut looking guy in a wheel chair gets rolled in next to me. He appears to be developmentally disabled, and has limited movement of his body. A dancing Deadhead guy in front of him turns around and talks to him. I thought, "how nice, this guy is being inclusive and welcoming the guy, what a cool hippie thing to do." Then a few minutes later the Deadhead has brought the guy a pipe and is holding it and lighting it for him to smoke from. And I think, "Now THAT is being inclusive!" I never would have thought to get the guy high. So that scene repeats a couple more times. Then about a half hour later someone else comes along and gets the guy in the chair high.

I appreciated how Loving a gesture this was to include a guy in the community ritual. At most gigs, the guy would be ignored. Here, the guy was brought into the community, not shunned as an outsider. I thought it was beautiful.

BTW- the show was phenomenal. They played the entire record, Workingman's Dead in the first set. Then played the entire record of American Beauty the second set. They're playing 5 nights in a row to close the Warfield. And playing different Dead records each night. That is some extreme musicianship to have that much material ready to play for 3 1/2 hours each night.

Sounds like an incredible show. That's the concept of the shows? Playing straight through different records?

If they're doing studio albums, seems like they might have shot their wad doing Workingman's Dead and American Beauty on the first night....Not that they don't have other good albums, but those two are arguably their best, studio-wise.
