Members echodeluxe
i performed the big muff "no diodes" mod this evening with great results. more mids, more volume, more "open" sound. not as gainy, but its still very fuzzy. i find it more usable for what im doing. its almost "overdrivey" but, fuzzy. it still retains the big muff character, but i feel that it opens it up a lot more. if anyone is frustrated with their NYC muff and wants a more usable sound thats not as dark and scooped, try this mod. all you gotta do is remove the four clipping diodes in the feedback circuit. http://www.student.ru.nl/r.kerkhof/Taas/Mods/Big%20Muff.htm under the "Easy Mods" heading. lots of other diode swap options. EDIT: clips on page 5!

Members jubb
I did the emitter mod to my russian muff, it's pretty cool.
Members echodeluxe
yeah the emitter mod seems pretty rad. im going to build a big muff in a small enclosure and stick a toggle/footswitch to switch between diode mods for different types of fuzz. should be fun. Members pbone
how small?
Members echodeluxe
as small as your dick. so like the size of seven big muffs. ok really though, im gonna try to do a really small (catalinbread) style box.

Members echodeluxe
i HOPE it will fit. the big problem is pots + jacks. we shall seeeeeee.
Members andrew_k
ok really though, im gonna try to do a really small (catalinbread) style box. You mean the 1590A? ('bantam' boxes). No chance dude, sorry. If you ditch the tone pot, use 9mm pots for the other two and design a double sided SMD PCB you might be able to squeeze it in there. I've got one in a 1590B and it's a tight fit. Even the simple boost I recently built in a 1590A was a much tighter fit that I thought.
Members echodeluxe
yeah, thats what i expected. oh well. i will try the smallest box possible.
Members andrew_k
If you buy the GGG PCB, it fits perfectly in a 1590B or 1590NS. They're plenty small.
Members echodeluxe
eh, im gonna etch my own. that way i can make it as small as possible by routing the traces and stuff. then i can integrate the mods into the pcb. and that green boost looks {censored}ING TITS. love the color and knob. Members luke978
I modded the reissue muff tone stack to Ram Head specs, did a footswitchable creamy dreamer, and installed a mid sweep. Its the one on the right:

Members melx
a joke. My muff has no diodes. how does it clip? .....um, forget it....failed.
Members Switchblade327
haha, I did the same thing for my muff. Was going to replace them with germanium, but I never bothered to source the diodes, and ended up liking it better that way. This was before I have almost {censored}ed the pedal and am now trying to fix. Still, god to know someone else did this, cool stuff!
Members johanwastaken
Sounds like something I would be interested in. If I want to do this with a switch, what value resistor could I put in there to limit the volume when the diodes are bypassed? Also, some other nice Big Muff mods would be nice to have. Members SonicVI
FYI, if you remove the diodes in the first clipping stage only you essentially have a Colorsound Supa Tone Bender. If you go further and bypass the 4th transistor stage after the tone control you have the Jumbo Tone Bender (also the current Tone Bender reissue). This is what Barber made switchable in the Trifecta.
Members Uma Floresta
I tried taking out the diodes. Hated it. It lost all focus, and just turned into fuzzy mush, IMO.
Members Orwell
An 'overdrivey' Muff? Why didn't you just get a Double Muff and keep the BMP as is?

Members kpd78
An 'overdrivey' Muff? Why didn't you just get a Double Muff and keep the BMP as is? a diode-less Big Muff and a Double Muff are still very different things. plus, the mod is easily reversible if the OP didn't like it.
