Members Dinosaur Sr. Posted July 10, 2008 Members Posted July 10, 2008 So, some long-time friends of mine are moving the the other side of the country. We're gonna throw them a going away party and since we've done a lot of music-related things with them over the years, we're gonna play them out with a combination of some songs we've written with them along with some generic covers everyone can get into. So we're rounding up a bunch of their friends to play with us, but many of them have different (Read: awful) choices for what we should be playing. So the question is what covers do you guys like to play just for fun for people. I.E. None of the br00talz:rawk: or anything, just some loose jams that everyone can dig on and have fun with (Johnny B. Goode anyone?). Shoot. Oh, and Stairway and Freebird are out.
Members BR4D Posted July 10, 2008 Members Posted July 10, 2008 A lot of classic rock stuff is easy to throw together and have fun on. You Really Got Me, Sunshine of your Love, that kind of thing.
Members jhamnett Posted July 10, 2008 Members Posted July 10, 2008 At college, all the girls went crazy for "You Give Love a Bad Name". And in HS, my jazz band would do a "cheezy rock song" at each concert... "Love Shack" was a favorite. You can definitely blow your pentatonic wad all over that one! NOTE: These are definitely "awful" choices. Felt that was a strict criterion.

Members Dinosaur Sr. Posted July 10, 2008 Author Members Posted July 10, 2008 Those are all great ideas, and for the record, this is definitely not supposed to be a serious concert that will make the audience weep. A few obviously cheesy songs are perfect, because if nothing else, the ones leaving will get the joke.
Members six acre lake Posted July 10, 2008 Members Posted July 10, 2008 Any and all things Devo should do the trick.
Members rileykill Posted July 10, 2008 Members Posted July 10, 2008 The Joker is the ultimate sing along, IMO.
Members Fender&EHX4ever Posted July 10, 2008 Members Posted July 10, 2008 I played covers in a band for about a decade in the 80s and 90s. Magic Carpet Ride was one that everyone always got up and danced for. All the GenXrs got worked up hearing Rebel Yell, Don't You (forget about me), and There She Goes. Jeezus, did I get sick of playing those songs; but now that it's been so long since I've gigged regularly, I would be delighted to play them again
Members Crxsh Posted July 10, 2008 Members Posted July 10, 2008 If you wanna make it fun, you should do some rap tunes ...... 'In the Club' by 50 Cent? 'Shake Your Money Maker' by Ludacris? Or go old school -- 'California Love' or 'Bitches Ain't {censored}' anyone?

Members Dinosaur Sr. Posted July 10, 2008 Author Members Posted July 10, 2008 I think I'd have to draw the line at the Beastie Boys.
Members loosegroove Posted July 10, 2008 Members Posted July 10, 2008 I think I'd have to draw the line at the Beastie Boys. Oh yeah, Fight for you right to party is a stupidly fun (and really easy) song to cover. Did that one in college. "Living at home is such a drag!" "Your mom threw away your best porno mag."
Members paul999b Posted July 10, 2008 Members Posted July 10, 2008 NOBODY STEAL/MAKE FUN OF MY IDEA, but we do a punked up version of "I think we're alone now" by Tiffany. Just listen to it....you can feel that rockin' vibe.

Members ChuckNorris1982 Posted July 10, 2008 Members Posted July 10, 2008 Until The End Of The World by U2 is a favourite of mine to play just cos I love the solo and the part where you immediately switch to a phased rhythm part for 4 bars straight after it. Everyone loves a bit of U2, too, and most of it's pretty easy to play.
