Best Distortion Pedal for a Marshall Plexi

Recommended Posts

I have a 1987x reissue Marshall and it sounds great without pedals. But I like the idea of having one in the loop anyway. My keeley tubescreamer, which sounds great on other amps, is a tone sucking machine with this Marshall. What do you suggest would work with this setup?

There's no such thing as a pedal that truely captures the plexi sound but the ZVex Box of Rock gets in the neighborhood.

Thanks for your suggestions, (other than the attenuator). I'm definitely going to look into those pedals and pick one of them up. As money is not a factor in my ultimate marshall pedal search, I don't care if it's a ritzy handmade boutique or a made in a sweat shop Chinese.

Baja Tech Custom Da Moaf. Big ass tone through a Marshall. I've never liked tube screamers through Marshall's they're for Fender's trying to get Marshall tone.

HAHAHAHAHA. sorry. i just think that non mv marshalls have the best od around.

No worries! You're right, but at volume, I'd wake up all of Southern Cal. Not that i care..

i don't put them in the fx loop, since it sucks, but I do have a bypass looper that I put them in. Why shouldn't I use pedals?

+1 You don't need an od already built in, you need a big ass fuzz to blow the doors off. :thu:

Then an attenuator would work?

Gets you that nice tubey sound, but at a fraction of the volume

Do you still have the bright cap in it?

I found the bright channel sounded too fizzy up till about 6 on the volume which is already too loud for a club if it's miced.

Lets see... I've got a few "always on" pedals that sound great with my plexi.

NYC Big Muff Pi > MXR 10 Band EQ > Chicken Salad > Mini Deja Vibe > Small Clone > Sonic Stomp = Sonic Fuzz

try a MIJ Boss DS-1,it's way more transparent than a tubescreamer,no un needed mid hump,no bass cut, dial the distortion knob down and keep the tone knob down as well, you'll get anything from low gain boost to full rythym crunch. just a suggestion.:idk:

Ok I don't know much about your amp model, but I've researched Scott Henderson's rig some. He likes Plexi's, not sure which model, but I know he's used them in the past. I believe his current custom amp has some Plexi in their somewhere. He hits the front of his amp with either the Xotic RC boost with gain and volume all the way up, a Maxon SD-9 gain and volume all the way up with tone down (when using humbuckers), and for single coils he uses a Maxon VOP-9. He uses single coils currently so he's using the Xotic RC and Maxon VOP-9. Check out his youtube vids. His gain sounds are awesome.
