How to fix: pedals make a loud "popping" sound when turning on/off

Before you start soldering, you need to verify that the problem is in the pedal, and not somewhere else (causing the pedal to pop). Try the RAT straight to amp. Does it pop? If not, some other pedal in your chain is the culprit. If it does, stick a Boss pedal between the RAT and the amp. If the popping stops, the amp is leaking DC voltage. If it still pops, it's definitely the pedal.

Pull-down resistors (1M is a good starting point) on the circuit input/output can help. Do not solder them to the input/output jacks - that will place them on the wrong side of the switch. Find the input/output from the circuit board, and solder them from those points to ground.
