Members frankiej
Depending on my area, if I was married or I had kids. If single, I could live well off of 40-50k....which is basically where a good amount of jobs I could land fall into.
Members arcarsenal72
I'd like to be making around $80k by 40, mostly because that would mean I'd be getting promotions that meet the work levels. Most of my co-workers make around $90-100k.

Members juri
Many people make the mistake of buying a house they can just about afford. Make sure to leave some room when making big purchases. You can try and pay more then the minimum needed that way and build some equity. Some real good financial advice is be happy with what you have, many people will always want more and that can lead to financial disasters, especially when the bubble bursts. Members spoonie g
Strangely enough, since I've been an adult, I care less about how much money I make and 'things' (well, except guitars, ha). When I was younger I used to think I wouldn't be happy unless I was makin $150k plus. Not saying I live on the wilderness, but I think it just depends how attached you are to money. But of course, I don't have kids....

Members Amiller1121
my two best friends intend to be multimillionaires with houses in california, and I'm already promised an aston martin. maybe I'll just bum off them for the rest of my life and just play guitar
Members Raskolnikovs axe
For the most part, you guys all seem to make way more money than me and I don't understand how you say you're barely getting by. I made 17k last year and have never made more than 23k and I do just fine. What some people define as necessity is just ridiculous to me. Members ItchyFingers
damn. you guys are rich...$30k would make me feel like i hadn't a care in the world...I remember saying this verbatim when I was washing dishes in college! Good on ya, canto! As my dad told me then, which is still true today - doesn't matter if you make $10G or $100G, you'll always live to just within your means. Members meelosh123
At least enough to not have to worry about the basics of survival. And then a little more to cover any "surprises."All while doing work that doesn't make me want to jump off a bridge!

Members claytonjohn18
If I finish this engineering degree, the median salary for Lehigh grads is 65-70k/yr depending on what type of engineer you are. I'm majoring in Industrial, but don't remember where IE falls in the spectrum. Median mid-career salary (approx. age 40) is like $120k. Members devonteran
Wanting the same standard of living as your folks makes sense.I live waaaay below my parent's standard of living. my wife and I have had the conversation and come to realize we will never make as much as our parents.they aren't rich either. Her dad is a landlord and mine is a school administrator.I'm a teacher and she's a cytologist. There just isn't the same upward mobility and I just don't see myself in the private sector.
