For what it's worth most of the politically conservative folks I know [including myself] do not consume Fox News, abhor the tea parties, resent the Palin puppet and are solidly middle class. Conservative political/social/economic views do not equal Fountainhead thumping racist.

I don't understand the logic behind hating welfare because of people abusing the it

don't hate the system and the people who use it correctly because of the thieves "working the system"

that's like being mad at people who use banks because someone else robs the place.

criminal acts will always be there, no matter who they're stealing from

* Eighty percent of poor households have air conditioning. By contrast, in
1970, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning.

{censored}ing absurd point. in 1970 2% of students had calculators, NOW THEY ALL HAVE EM AHHHHHHHH

* The typical poor American has more living space than the average individual living in Paris, London, Vienna, Athens, and other cities throughout Europe. (These comparisons are to the average citizens in foreign countries, not to those classified as poor.)

there's more space in rural montana than in a european metropolis!? {censored} me.

* Nearly three-quarters of poor households own a car; 31 percent own two or more cars.

you can buy a car for $500, so this doesn't mean {censored}. also rednecks always have a few cars rusting on the lawn.

* Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions.

how old is this {censored}ing article? what the {censored} am i reading? firstly, they don't even make non-color TVs anymore. secondly, a used TV can be had for $30 at any thrift store

* Seventy-eight percent have a VCR or DVD player; 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception.

again, these items can be had for less than it costs to fill the gas tank in a car

* Eighty-nine percent own microwave ovens, more than half have a stereo, and a more than a third have an automatic dishwasher.

this {censored} is ridiculous and i find it disturbing how willing you are to swallow such obvious bull{censored}. but hey, as long as it blames the poor, right?

Ever see Cinderella Man? A REAL man would do what he did - once you're out of poverty, PAY IT BACK. But noone does. Instead, they find ways that they can get MORE for free, putting even more stress on the system.

Really? You're bringing a hollywood bastardization of a story into a serious discussion? And as if that isn't ridiculous enough you try to assert masculine essentialism as if it were a fact? How can you expect anyone to take the rest of your post seriously when you bring in this nonsense?

Enforcing ideas of marriage as a ladder out of poverty is a joke. The idea of marriage as a ladder is a joke. Marriage doesn't fix any problem. Yes, you bring two incomes (generally) into a household, but you also bring in two debts and sets of expenses, if not more, to be followed by children. And this isn't the 1800's where children are a viable source of familial income - we banned that {censored} decades ago. Marriage is not a problem solver, especially not for poverty. If it is, why are so many married couples struggling? Why are there so many impoverished families (which start by marriage)?

Pbone and Parah Salin, based solely on this thread: :thu:

A lot of people think all union workers are lazy underworked, overpaid socialists, but we know that's not true right SAL?

Young grandma, your post made my day. I've been hearing the same crap about welfare since Reagan.
