Members pighood
why do you assume we are all white on this forum? Why do YOU assume that I assumed you're all white? Members syncretism
I believe Geraldine Ferraro got swept aside for that VERY SAME contention. Or will one of you "progressives" set me str8 on that matter? It was a repugnant sentiment when Ferraro expressed it too, and it was still wrong. Your other observation is astute, but overstated. It would be disingenuous to say that race has been irrelevant to Obama's campaign, but so far as it's concerned, there's a difference between the passive racism and sexism you describe and the hype surrounding an America within voting distance of a black president and a female vice-president. I say "hype," because {anecdotally, at least} the contest for the Dem nomination turned really ugly along gender lines, and I hold out little hope that either result would normalize relations between African-Americans, women and those who still see them as "Other." But don't discount those who simply think Obama will be a better, or less egregious, president. They're out there, and there's a good chance they'll carry him to the White House. Members syncretism
Liberalism is one HUGE bigot factory....the soft bigotry of low expectations. So don't tire yourself out by patting your little redselves on the back in recognition of your so-called "enlightenment." You possess nothing of the kind. You people treat your constituent victim groups like helpless pets who can't make it in life without your guilty white liberal benificence. "You people," eh? I said earlier that I think you've overstated your case, but this does remind me of something that's nagged me for awhile, so I hope you'll forgive the digression. In early 2007, VP nominee Joe Biden, assessing his rivals for the candidacy, said... I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man. A few things to note, from the outset: 1, he was referring to Obama as a candidate, not as a person or representation of his race, and he flubbed that spectacularly. 2, he was wrong, overlooking previous presidential campaigns by Alan Keyes, Jesse Jackson and several others I'm sure I've forgotten. 3, that assessment applied as much to the state of contemporary politics in the US as it did Obama himself. It's a clumsy way to say "Look how far we've come." So far, so good. Biden's poor phrasing, apparent ignorance of recent history or tacit acknowledgment of racism that has pervaded American culture since its inception were minor offenses, but calling Obama "articulate" was objectionable. You don't call an African-American "articulate," even if it's true, and here's why: 1, the word has become "code" language, like "flamboyant" or "hysterical," and has a specifically pejorative connotation when a white person uses it to describe a black person. In that context, we're either betraying unspoken surprise at the subject's intelligence or we're insensitive to the realities surrounding the word, which leads me to 2, it's too commonly used, even in good faith, to go unremarked. When we rely on these cliched, loaded phrases to make our points, we're employing "pre-wired" thinking, and we're not giving the subject the attention it deserves by actually addressing and thinking about it. It doesn't necessarily make us racist {as asking a girl to smile doesn't necessarily make us sexist pigs}, but it means we have to try harder. I'm not trying to sound cute, but I paraphrase something Carbon 111 said elsewhere in asserting that, as thinking beings, we are modular, rather than fixed, in architecture. We have to work to keep our signal paths flexible and interesting as we get older, and Biden's comment made it apparent to me that, at least in matters race and gender {cf the Clarence Thomas hearings}, he's a few patch points short of a Serge. Or something. The metaphor doesn't survive a search of my posting history because, by my own admission, modulars aren't really my cup of tea, but I'm sure you grok the sentiment. Pighood, there's no denying that ethnicity has been co-opted by white culture and used as a prop for self-aggrandizement, self-criticism {relegation of an entire race of people to the role of mirror in Conrad's Heart of Darkness comes to mind}, or simply telling a white guy's story - cf Glory or Shogun. I'm sure that, one of these days, we'll see a movie about Tienanmen Square with an American guy standing in front of that tank. It's a deplorable, but by no means universal, practice that people should be conscious of in the media. But Obama's role in this election is his story, as well as America's. As odious as the "magical black man" trope in American culture is, I'd greatly appreciate it if you'd stop referring to Obama as the "chocolate messiah," and variations on that. It's as partially accurate an indictment of American culture as any other, but it does a disservice to everyone here. Edit, I'd be remiss to ignore Biden's "clean" and "nice looking" BS. He deserved a hard kick in the ass for that. I actually kinda hate him, but I would still vote for Obama.
