I don't know enough about the nuances of the different versions, but since it was in '66 I'd say that narrows it down considerably - I'd guess a Mk.1 as those sound the least Fuzz Facey to me.

Yeah, it sounds way raspier than how I imagine a Fuzz Face to sound. The whole Tonebender family tree (and how the design got passed around so many different companies) and it's various incarnations is really confusing to me.

erk's probably right with the MK1 suggestion. It has that zippery Fuzztone like tone but pushed sounding ala a little more sustain. You could probably nail that with a boost in front of a fuzztone, shin-ei fy-2, or fuzzrite btw.

Hah, yeah. There was a good article in a British guitar magazine about it a few months ago, very interesting story. But you had like 4 or 5 companies making them at various points: Coloursound, Vox, Marshall, Sola Sound, not to mention the guy that originated the design Gary Hurst.

It is a much better value but while it does sound good and is made by a cool guy, there are other clones that sound better imho (they do cost more though).
