Members The_Pin Posted October 31, 2011 Members Posted October 31, 2011 Anyone own the MC401 and a germanium fuzz like the Fuzz Factory? How do you order these on your boards and why? My thought is that both of these pedals need to be first so I'm in a bit of a quandary. I hope to hear from someone with experience with both pedals. Will putting the Fuzz first negate the existence of the buffer? Will putting the buffer first diminish the fuzz's tone?

Members macadood Posted October 31, 2011 Members Posted October 31, 2011 hmmm i JUST sold away on CL my MC401 today, and now that ive come to think about it i've only run it with silicon fuzzes (Lunar Module dlx, BYOC large beaver i think is silicon, and monsterpiece NPN) and it sounds great with those. i always had the MC401 in front of the fuzz to hit them with extra volume in front to get more gain, and it gives a slight volume boost too. im sure you'll be happy with it, its a real solid clean boost. i'd think it would be ok with germanium fuzz but i'll let someone else answer that who's had experience iwth it if you just had the MC401 after your germanium fuzz that would sound good regardless as the buffer would be behind the fuzz, not affecting the fuzz and just making your fuzzed sound much louder
Members The_Pin Posted October 31, 2011 Author Members Posted October 31, 2011 Thanks for your input. I just don't wanna destroy the MC401's usefullness as a buffer (which is why I bought it) by not placing it first. I use a TS9 for "clean" boost. Just want the 401 for it's buffering capabilities through my board and don't wanna destroy the fuzz tone from the FF.

Effect chain tone suck (impedance issues, etc.) is (usually) a cumaltive problem. If you have one pedal in your chain and aren't using too long of cables, you probably don't notice the loss of highs, but as you start adding more effects and cables, you notice it. I run my buffer after my GE fuzzes and still gain the benefit. If you are serious about buffering, you should get active pickups are run the buffer directly out of the guitar, before the cable to your chain, but that'd be crazy right?

I know that I'm over thinking it. But I just bought the MC401, waiting for it's arrival by UPS 2morrow and I'm trying to kinda plan out my chain before it arrives. It's looks like a nice boost, but I want to use it as a buffer only. In my mind, if it is not the first in chain, it's not seeing the guitar and therefore not passing the guitar's tone, but rather the tone of the guitar that has already run thru the bypass circuit of the Fuzz or whatever else is in front. My real concern is the Fuzz Factory being after the MC401. Will it change the tone of the FF much seeing a low impedance from the buffer rather than the high from the guitar? I dunno....thought I'd check and see if somebody had exactly the same 2 pedals or the MC401 and had any thoughts. Searched HCFX like crazy and couldn't find anything on the topic. PS: I do have a PRS with EMG active 89n/81b. But my passive geetars sound a little dull thru my signal path...(in my sig)...and I don't wanna 86 my Boss pedals so I thought I'd give the 401 a try for a lift. Thanks for your replies! Any thoughts or advice is welcomed.
Members The_Pin Posted November 13, 2011 Author Members Posted November 13, 2011 My impressions after my NGD= MC401 is an awesome clean boost but needs to be placed after the Fuzz Factory. Can't really notice any "buffering" when A/B'ing the MC401 at less than around 4-6 dB with passives and a little higher with EMG's. Really a great and very transparent boost. I love how it creams up the OD's and distortions that I run after it in the chain. Especially the TS9 set to low gain. Gorgeous tones, just pushes that signal real hard into the dirt section. Very happy with the purchase/placement for now. Thanx for input!
Members drkam6 Posted September 6, 2012 Members Posted September 6, 2012 I have a Fuzz Factory and I've used the MC401 in the same pedalboard. You must place the MC401 AFTER the Fuzz Factory. The MC401 has a buffer and it will kill the "oscillation/theremin effect" of the Fuzz Factory if you place it first. On my pedalboard I just placed it after the FF and it sounds great. The Fuzz Factory does not like buffered inputs at all. I reviewed this with Zachary himself. The FF must be the first effect box right after the guitar, or it must be fed with an unbuffered signal source.
Members macadood Posted September 6, 2012 Members Posted September 6, 2012 dont have a fuzz factory, but i used a mc401 to boost all of my fuzzes and distortions and it worked great
Members Cirrus Posted September 6, 2012 Members Posted September 6, 2012 If you have one pedal in your chain and aren't using too long of cables... TOO LONG OF CABLES!?!?!?!?!?! WHAT? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
Members Cirrus Posted September 6, 2012 Members Posted September 6, 2012 I really liked the MC-401 I had but I used it too far of position along my signal chain to be any help to you here, OP.
Members dZjupp Posted September 6, 2012 Members Posted September 6, 2012 i've always placed mine after all dirt, before dirt, it sucks
Members arthurdent'd Posted September 6, 2012 Members Posted September 6, 2012 I use an MC-401 last in the chain, I love it! GE fuzzes like the Fuzzface hate buffers before them.
