How bad are feedback issues in semi-hollow bodies?

its not as bad as a Casino or full hollow body. It has a center block that runs down the center plus the Humbuckers aren't as noisy as P90s. If you're playing high gain or fuzzy stuff, yeah you're gonna get some feedback. But for general rock, you'll be fine.

Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters uses a semi hollow & they're pretty rock.

Unpotted pickups are much more of a problem.

yes this.

just so you know...i owned a Sheraton (and loved it) but eventually something WILL break with the electronics (switch, pot, jack, something)....when that happens, just replace everything....the pickups, pots, jack, switch, caps, wiring.....its such a pain in the ass to replace one thing, you might as well upgrade it all. Get some good was potted pickups and you'll be fine.

The stock pickups arent bad, but when you upgrade, you'll definitely know the difference.

Stuffin old shirt or something in the body is an old trick that's supposed to help. As far as I know of it's unpossible to completely solve the problem with single coils in semi hollows, I guess it's a small downside you have to live with when playing loud music on (semi) hollow bodies. Dave Grohl's ego just takes up too much space on the stage to allow feedback sound waves to travel freely.

In my experience it can be a problem. Standing in the right place, not using a lot of gain etc help to control it. The plus side is that the instrument comes alive. Resonance is a beautiful thing if you use it. Some people seem to have more of a problem than others, I seem to manage OK but my co-guitarist seems to have endless problems with his. YMMV.

I've got a 335 with unpotted pups and I really have no issues with feedback/microphonics at high gain levels. I can get controlled feedback via the pup in the speaker trick. The bigger issue those pups is when used with full hollow bodies. I think there's more vibration going on the top of the body and they just hang off the top and vibrate along with it. On a semi-hollow the top is glued to the center block almost eliminating this type of vibration. Certain guitars like some Gretsches have a trestle bracing that stabilizes the top and acts more like the center block of a semi also cutting down the effect.

I have a tokai 335 style and get the most glorious controlled feedback when playing my jcm 800, but that is a good thing. I have recently had an issue lately at rehearsal getting feedback when i am singing and playing this guitar, but the rehearsal studio i use has pa speakers that face the band. I have nevr had that issue on stage using wedges.

Not a problem at all if you are muting your strings between what you're playing. And the feedback is right on tap when you want it.

Thanks for your help guys, by the sound of it, it can be controlled with careful playing, and if it so happens that I can't control it, then I can just change the pups and I'll be all good.
