Guitar noise question

So I spend most of my guitar playing time sitting at my desk with my laptop on looking at tabs/pod edit etc. And I'm getting a LOT of {censored}ty interference noise from the laptop screen/hdd/whatever. This is especially a problem if I'm trying to record cause I have to gate the {censored} out of my signal. Now my guitar is pretty shoddily wired, and isn't particularly quiet in itself, so is the {censored}ty earthing etc in the guitar making this significantly worse? Also would shielding the control cavity significantly improve the situation?

Cheers

If the noise drops away exactly and immediately with turning down the guitar's volume, it is being picked up by the pickups. So the trick would be to reduce what gets to them, not what happens later.

Is your system grounded? The guitar especially but also maybe the computer (if seperate).
