This {censored} dude. My neighbor(non band mate neighbor) plays in a rock abilly surf rock band and they have covered this song before and he has mentioned it in discussing early bands/guitar players using distortion prior to Sabbath.

Link Wray claims he recorded Rumble in '54!

 

This guy was consistantly using fuzz pretty early, I mean on like every song.

 

Funny that he uses Rat pedals for fuzz, also I saw the Ventures a few years ago and Bob Bogle talked about how he used fuzz on 2000lbs Bee, then he played it and he used a boss sd1 for fuzz.
