Members 50calexplorer
I finally traded my '65 RI Twin Reverb this weekend after much shopping and trying different things out. I went to Dave's Guitar in La Crosse, WI (great shop HIGHLY recommended!!!, more on this later). Here's a run down on the amps I tried. All were through a Marshall 1960A lead cab w/ my 70's strat with some special pickups. Marshall 6100 LM head- This is a really great amp the clean was a little bit better than the JCM 2000's and crunch and lead channels were really good as well, there were a lot of cool tones in this amp with cascading gain switches, I was very close to picking this amp. Mesa Heartbreaker head- Another versatile head, the clean was very good. The gain channel was great as well, I really wish I would have had all day to tweak it and play with it. Rivera Knucklehead II- This is the whole reason I went all the way to La Crosse, and it didn't dissappoint. The clean was amazing. Channel 2 was great as well, I didn't notice any overbearing bass that I had heard about with this head. I didn't use the scoop and had the 'sweet' pot pulled. The definition of the amp was what sold me on the amp. It was a tight race between the Marshall and Rivera but the string to string definition was what one out. I wish there were more Rivera dealers as well. This was the first one I had seen in Wisconsin.
