Some of you guys are giving WAY too much credit to the producer for the final results in terms of Metallica's music and direction.

I grew up on Metallica since first hearing Ride the Lightning (I was about 12 when that came out). They were angry and hungry teenagers just like I was and their music and attitude spoke to me and reflected that aggression and attitude. I grew up on that and it was great.

And now...not that it's a bad thing, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to have the same kind of sound and music with that level of intensity once you're no longer fighting to be heard AND you're rich in wealth and have EVERYTHING you could want.

You have a family - you just "grow up". The music is going to change to reflect that.

And I've grown up to - I'm not here playing Thrash metal in my studio at the age nearing 34 and with a wife and two kids. It's just a different time - going back to the past would just feel stupid to me if I were to do that.

With "St. Anger", James talked and wrote about some demons from the past and issues, but I thought some of the music itself sounded like it was "forced" (by themselves - not necessarily Rock) to be that way because they were trying to make a Metallica album in the earlier vein.

I see that as their struggle - they want to do what they want to do, but at the same time, I believe that they DO want to create something that people will like and enjoy - so they ARE going to try and appease the fans, regardless of what they may say to the media.

If they didn't give a {censored} about the public, then why even put out an album? Why even have a website, or even promote anything? They care, and they know the public's perception I'm sure...They're going to do their best to cater to it while at the same time trying to have fun I'm sure.

At their level, they'll take input from a Producer, but it's THEIR show and ultimate decision. Just my 2 cents.

Did you see "Some Kind Of Monster"?

Bob can double up, because James can only work until 3:00. It's like stressful and {censored}... not good for his inner child...makes him drink to numb the pain of his aweful memories and childhood issues from the place where Bob Savage and I grew up too.

Poor James:freak:

While I would not blame Bob Rock for the St. Anger, I do believe a new producer would help bring out a different direction. Maybe bring a little of that discomfort and uncertanty into the studio. They have worked with Bob long enough and it is time for a new Producer to step in and challenge the band. Question is, is metallica ready to be challeged? That I don't know.

I do. It was his "idea" to do the album that way. "Hey, I know, let's throw 40 years of production technology in the trash and do a RAW record like in the olden days!". Yeah, great idea. The result was the biggest piece of trash this past decade. It was so bad they secretly re-did it when almost noone liked it. No, it's all Bob's fault.

Maybe we'll hit the jackpot this time around and they'll do another one of those "let's play with the London Symphony!" cd's. At least it would be entertaining watching all those Julliard graduates roll their eyes while they are forced to play that crap. Should be fun.;):D

Ding Ding!!! Somebody finally has the right answer.

I love how everybody thinks that if they get rid of Bob Rock they're suddenly going to turn into the "old Metallica" again.

Please. BR may have been an influence but Metallicas direction is purely in Metallica's hands at this point.

With that being said, I loved and still love the Black album....great album. It's everything after that that sucked IMO. The songwriting and riffs went downhill.....you can't put all that on Bob Rock.

I do blame Bob Rock for the production of St. Anger. I'm sure the tunes are ok (minus the shortage of guitar solos), but I just can't listen to it for more than 2 minutes without becoming totally disgusted with the sounds......that snare is the worst abomination in the world....
