not quite techno like the Exorcist but Thomas Tallis wrote this piece called "Spem In Alum" towards the end of the 16th century, at a time when Catholicism was on the outs in Britain. Latin chants (although I've read that Elizabeth was fond of singing, there were apparently limits...) that are very far out sounding. There has been some suggestion that it was written for performance in an octagonal room in a palace of a Catholic nobleman as it's a motet for 40 voices in kind of an old testament lamentation. Like Gregorian chants but polyphonic and otherworldly, song of the doomed sort of vibe.

There are different versions but the one by the King's College Singers cond by Philip Ledger is worth tracking down. 4 speakers help too...

i've heard that piece in stereo before, i'd love to hear it in surround...probably much easier to tell what all's going on :p

not necessarily, it kind of comes together and then drifts apart and comes together. All the voices are pretty creepy though. It would also be very interesting to get a big EQ and play with that for it.

Start with Koyaanisqatsi. If you like piano, try his solo piano album. It's outstanding.

have you ever checked out the Candyman soundtrack he did? Amazon sells it but I've slacked off getting non-iTunes music lately and I never got around to it.

There is a NYC college station I used to listen to that would play really...and I some mean really, frightening electronic music late at night. I miss it. Like taking acid listening to that stuff....make the hair on the back of your head stand up.
But, a lot of the stuff is very obscure and predates the midi synth explosion.
I've bought a lot of electronic label sampler stuff, just on the chance of finding some good creepy music. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't...its a crap shoot, but nothing that comes close to the stuff I used to get on the radio, unfortunately, but I'm always on the lookout.
There is one Philip Glass piece (I have a good number of his works, but I haven't listened in a while)... I think its called," dance of the dead" or "funeral procession" or something with "dead" in the title thats pretty creepy.
Its on one of those "Quetzeequalylphiltaas" albums of his! ;) I forget which...I do have it though.
There's some music on Brian Eno's, "The Shutov Assembly" has some stuff you might be looking for. He also does a lot of collaborations with other composers that may fit the bill too.
I have a Vomito Negro cd that also has a few creepy gems on it.
Many, many others are out there. Unfortunately it'll take some research.
I'm pretty hardcore for scary music. Music would have to be really out there for me to certify it as good stuff, if I do say so myself. Keep looking.

EAR (Electronic Audio Research I think...) has some interesting trippy electronic {censored} too. One of the dudes from Spacemen 3 and Kevin Shields from MBV presumably getting blazed and twiddling knobs. We got WalMart gift cards @ work for some kind of bonus thingy so I got a bunch of their stuff and it's pretty cool. It may not be creepy enough but it is otherworldly...

that's on "Black Angels" by the Kronos Quartet, which has their version of "Spem in Alum" which is not remotely as haunting or creepy as the vocal versions, IMHO. There's a cool piece about Vietnam on it though, w/ violins sounding like bugs eating corpses in the jungle...

Any reccomendations?
:)

TB is not necessarily scary, its probably more of the visual association with the movie that creeps you out....and that bit is only a small part of the larger composition..

I see you're in the UK. I believe a lot of your fellow countrymen have come up with some good electronic stuff in the chilling vein.
For instance, how about "Hamburger Lady" by Throbbing Gristle. Spooky music played along with the reading of a burn victims hospital record.
Cheers. ;)

I you re looking for creepy stuff (atmospheric music) check out the following:

John Zorn: IAO Music In Sacred Flight (my personal favorite)

John Zorn: Magick

Naked City: Absinthe

Steve Roach: Midnight Moon (my second favorite)

I love listening to this ambient type music (especially when I am in my dark moods). Check these guys out, they are seriously great.
