Im just about to purchase my first amp that isn't a practice amp, but am looking for suggestions. My preference in sounds is something like 70's Stones/Faces, but I do play some distorted stuff with other guys around town. I don't want a sloppy distortion, but I nice crunch... any help?

You might look into the older Ampegs. I have a VT40 and it nails Keef pretty nicely, cleaning up w/ just the knob and covers a wide range of tones. It is heavy as {censored} though. If you do the Keef tuning it will get right in the pocket, just {censored}ing around. No master volume though...

I watched this terrible movie called One + One, or sympathy for the devil by a then famous French film director from about 1968, which featured a LOT of the stones working on the song sympathy for the devil in the studio..

I seem to recall keith going back and forth between two Vox amps, like an ac15/ac30 and then a much bigger one, like an AC100 or Super Beatle, trying to get the right tone.. I dont think the movie actually captures him nailing that signature solo/tone in the final song version, but he seemed to be well on his way towards that.

one extremely sad part of that movie was seeing an extremely bloated, drugged-up and wasted looking Brian Jones, plithly strumming at an acoustic guitar with headphones on.. it seemes like he heard him self in the mix, but that is not what was being recorded on the board or the actual recording *sad face* appeared kinda cruel, actually

I'm telling you, the VT40 will get you there, it has a unique, dry stinky but thick distortion that is all over the Stones' tracks from the early 70s. It can do other stuff as well but will get into 'Heartbreaker' or 'Midnight Rambler' territory very easily.

The market is pretty reasonable, you should be able to find one around $300 or $400. Less the shipping, of course, you'd be better off to track one down you could pick up as you'd save 70 or 80 lbs worth of shipping.

There's a pic of Keef sitting on one somewhere on the net but I'm not able to find it. Perhaps it'll turn up here.

Save yourself some $.

Get you a Fender Silverface Bandmaster off EBay or your favorite pawn shop.

Use it w/ a 1x12 ext. cab. Put an OD pedal in front of the amp w/ the dist. low, and the level @ noon.

Oh, and of course...........tune that guitar right.;)

Open G,

From your 6th string down- D,G,D,G,B,D

Early on, the Stones used standard tuning, but a dirty Fender will still get you there.
