If you get one... I'd highly recommend GB's. Either the Heritage or Classics. I have the Classics since the Heritages are $170 a speaker. I haven't tried G12H30's yet. They're supposed to be great with Plexi-style amps as well. I've tried CL80's and Eminence Private Jacks and they just don't sound right with this amp.

did you ever try it with g12t-75's?

I haven't... I bet it would sound ok. The thing I've noticed is that those amps like vintage speakers. Ineffecient, low wattage speakers.

Ummm, no, but thanks for asking! :D Still have a full head of thick Italian hair on me, although more often than not it's in some sort of military cut (air force brat, old habits die hard). My father would disown me if I ever sported a ponytail!!! :freak:

My dad was in the air force too..and never had a problem with my hair. Of course I'm sure anyone would disown me for sporting a skullet :D

Trace I love that V Plex clip. Do you have anymore?

We're working on more clips as we speak (from customers). As all of us here log 68-72 hours a week it's hard to find the free time to record clips. We are working on securing a new facility and which ever building we go with we will be setting a studio where everything is in place for sound clips. Then all we need to do is edit and mix the clips down.

How much would putting in an FX loop mess with the tone?

It's not something I would recommend for a plexi as it will/does alter the tone.

No snake oil involved it all comes down to the PSU and transformers in this particular amp.

Thanks for the info Trace! What I heard in that one clip sounded a bit more modern to me. Now that could possibly be the MD421. What I heard through my headphones was a huge tight low-end and rolled highs.

A 421 allows the natural lower frequencies to come through (depending on where the roll off switch is set to) where a SM57 rolls off the lows (see the spec charts on both mics). Also the MD421 is an older one as are the SM57's we use (the older models sound different than the newer versions).

I didn't hear the sizzle in the highs that are normally associated with these amps.

Sizzle means many things to many players. With that being said a lot of comes down to how you mic the amp.

Again... I'm going by the clip. I never heard the amp in person and it's a killer-sounding clip so I wasn't trying to offend anyone. It just didn't sound an unmodded Marshall to me. Of course, in person, it might be entirely different.

Again it's not modified in any way what so ever. A lot of has to do with the transformer set, which transformers are something many techs completely over look or never take the time to truly understand. Marshall used different OT's, PT and chokes in the 60's (original plexis) so there is no "one plexi" that someone can use as reference. Naturally the circuits were some what similar (given the variances, etc.) and we've seen some odd-ball models come through as well.

Trace how loud was the amp on those clips? Did it have PPIMV, or hotplate?

No attenuator, some were Master Volume and some were Non-Master Volume. If you go with the Master Volume you can get the distortion at bedroom/TV volumes and of course also at gigging volumes. When the Master is on 10 it's 100% out of the circuit.

Happy New Year! :)

thanks my man!

i'm seriously thinking about pulling the trigger on one of vic's pickups though. his tone, as demonstrated in the first link in my signature, is just the best stinking tone! it bristles with energy.

ralle 500, who has a KILLER VH tone, has a clip up on his site with no backing track, and when heard in that context, i think i prefer the peacemaker tone.

although ralle has more gain which makes it easier to play fast runs.

and in the end, there are a group of very capable players here who have been searching for the ultimate rock tone and who have all slammed on their breaks when they hit the peacemaker.

Marshall makes the ONLY Plexi :o You have to replace the OT with a Merc Mag and install a PTP board to get the headroom and original tone back. Metro amps gets it pretty close.

How does PTP give more headroom?

It doesn't

I think he means the transformer gives the headroom

Correct, also biasing will make a difference (to a degree).

van weelden is an asshat, his prices are high and he's not know for stock plexis but for modding them.

but i once heard a van weelden modded plexi and all i can say is  that guy knows his way around amps, i never was so instantly impressed by an amp before that. But the amp was definately into medium gain territories (and thats quite beyond acdc kinda stuff in my book) and nowhere near stock plexi kinda stuff.
