Members loudgtr
I just finished reading this old interview in an Aug/04 Guitar World issue I have. Made me think of how much I used to listen to the "Tribute" album. Man that album just flat out Rocks!! There's been alot of "Jake" love on this forum lately(and rightly so) but I thought how about some for R.R. Clips of course are welcome;) Now I gotta go and dust off that "Tribute" CD and give it a spin. Man I used to play the heck out of that record when I was yonger. Cheers! Members Urban Ghandi
Randy Rhodes was unbelievably talented...Tribute is a cool album but I like the first two MUCH more! I always crack up when people at HCAF chime in with "his tone sucks!" If his tone sucks then put me down for some sucky tone!

I can't speak to all of his work, because my exposure to him is limited (basically because I hate Ozzie, he's the consummate poser), but his rhythm tone in Crazy Train is just plain crappy. The MXR distortion that he put in front of his marshall gave his tone an awful buzzy coating that makes me cringe every time I hear it. Go back and listen to the first few measures of the main riff before everything else comes in and you'll see what I mean. If not, go see an ear specialist. I'm not trying to bag on the guy, he had more talent in one finger than I have in my whole body, but I'm not so blinded by awe as to be unable to differentiate between someone's playing and their tone. The two are completely different aspects of someone's sound. Crazy Train is a classic example of great playing, awful tone, at least the rhythm track. The opposite example would be Blink 182: great tone, awful playing (not because they screw up a lot, but because it's watered down, mainstsream, psuedo music). Members ChihliDog
I'm a Randy fanatic...the guy was a pure genius, and really it was his playing that got me to pick up a guitar...him and Zakk Wylde. But..........as far as the tribute album, I used to think "WOW, holy CRAP that guy was SOOOO flawlessly fast!". Then I found out that the album was sped up about 10%, or something like that. I was bummed. His playing, however, his composition, melodies, incorporation of classical theory into metal and all that was and is still amazing. Members BORR4
Ozzy is a poser?? WTF?? As a massive Sabbath & Ozzy fan this is blasphemy. If your only exposure to Ozzy is The Osbornes then I guess I can understand this but seriously man - Ozzy is the King of metal front men. I will admit that the current Ozzy is a bit of a shame because he has been commercialized but at the same time have a little repsect. He's been doing this for 40 YEARS! In all my years of seeing great concerts nobody and I mean nobody controlled a crowd better than Ozzy. Maybe he should have hung it up a while ago but who are we to tell him what to do? He has been there - done that many times over and is a heavy metal legend. Ozzy in his prime was the best - of course this all just my opinion but calling him a poser - I can only shake my head. I've tried this and I think it's true. The sound seems warmer with less mids but can muddy up on you quick. I go back and forth on how I like it set:freak: I understand the digs about his studio tone. Never thought it was that great honestly. Although I always liked his guitar sound at the end of "You Can't Kill Rock&Roll" It's the "Tribute" album guitar sound that to me is the definition of "Rippin" tone:thu: There are times on that album that I think his cabinets are just going to explode:eek:

Members '63-Strat
I really like Randy's playing but not always a fan of his tone. Doesn't really matter about his tone when his playing is good IMO. But I will say I MUCH prefer randy to ZW!

This is just my opinion, but anyone in music who needs gimmicks to get noticed is a poser, and everything Ozzy has done in my lifetime has been a series of gimmicks. Don't get me wrong, I can respect the fact that he has made a career in the music business despite not having a single drop of actual musical talent. In fact, I'm quite jealous, I wish I had been smart enough to do the same. I'm a purist, to me, music should be about , gasp, MUSIC, not some jackass spitting fake blood all over the place. That might impress the teeny boppers and the limp dick wanna be's, but I'm into people who can actually play. Ozzy has been smart enough to ride the coat tails of some VERY good guitar players, but he has never done anything that has remotely impressed me on any level. I love early Sabbath, but not because of Ozzy, like most people, but in spite of him. He's just some guy yelling, any meathead can do that. Iommi created heavy metal and Ozzy just rode shotgun. Members cloudnine
Every lead singer "rides the coattails" of their band but they become icons for a reason - Ozzy, Roth, Mercury, Rose, etc.

His lyrics were always pretty interesting I've heard people say. I was too busy listening to all the guitar stuff goin' on;)

Maybe you can explain to me how someone who has never played a guitar in his life "created" a genre that is completely guitar driven? Or how about the fact that all of his solo albums are written by other people, either the musicians playing with him, or in the case of at least one album, a record company stooge (before you attack that, it came straight from the mouth of Zack in an interview I read a few years back). Hmmmmm....... Sounds like you are giving credit where NONE is due. When people call him the godfather of metal, I laugh my pants off, because there is nothing metal about the dude, or any singers, for that matter. Metal is about guitar riffs that kick you in the teeth, so as soon as Ozzie starts playing a few of those, come back and we'll talk.

Members Urban Ghandi
Uh.... Well, rock is indeed a guitar driven/oriented thing but it hasn't always been that. It started as a rebellion thing...an attitude more so than related to any particular instrument. Who's got more attitude than Ozzy? I never watch "The Osbournes" so I'm not really commenting on "what he has become." You gotta give him some credit...his career has spanned 4 decades...he's been a part of countless "memorable" hard rock songs. I hear ya, he's just a singer and he may or may not have been a huge force behind all those hits but it was him - and he is the voice of metal in many people's eyes. Millions of people cannot be wrong about this...

Members BORR4
It's all good - they are all just opinions. I just have a hard time seeing someone post that Ozzy is a poser. The guy is literally burnt to a crisp and probably should have died a long time ago. What gimmicks do you think Ozzy ever needed? Sabbath was a raw kick ass rock / metal band that didn't use gimmicks. I've seen Ozzy and / or Sabbath at least 20 times and I've never once seen him spit blood or do any of that. IMO Ozzy (in his prime) had the greatest voice ever for that style of music. I do have a question though - how can someone in to metal (just assuming that since your moniker is MetalHed) show such disrespect for someone like Ozzy? He is the real deal and I can't see how that can be even debated.
