I don't know about the DX7, but "Bad" had D-50 all over it.

There was a lot of DX7 on the Bad album as well:

- Bass on "Another Part of Me"

- Percussive sounds on "Liberian Girl"

- Intro chime sound and DX Rhodes on "Man In The Mirror"

By the time the Bad album was recorded the whole DX7 thing was overused already, so they kept it at a minimum.

In contrast, the Jacksons 1984 Victory album had TONS of DX7 on it. And nearly all the synth sounds used on the Victory Tour came from a DX7, DX1 or a TX816.

I always though that, of all the series of Yamaha FM DX instruments that were out in that line, most producers preferred the bass sounds off the DX21 or TX81Z.

On the title track of "Bad", that sounds like a DX21 layered with something eles...maybe an ESQ1.............

Oh, and Axel F includes DX7 Bells and Marimba, according to Wikipedia.

Yeah that's right, I forgot that one.

As someone mentioned earlier, the DX-7 was also used quite a bit on the

Doctor Who TV-show. Here are some examples from the early 1985 episode The Two Doctors (music by Peter Howell):

That bass sound is awesome. It's the only synth preset that I prefer to keep unchanged, it's just perfect.

Runaway Train OST (Trevor Jones, 1985):

DX-5 slap bass sound

I'm only just managing to catch up with all the youtube videos now!

This OST has a very similar sound to Trevor Jones' 1986 soundtrack for the film Labyrinth. This page: http://www.vintagesynth.com/yamaha/dx5.php says that DX5 was used for both.

To be honest, throughout this whole thread, I've heard both good and bad usage of the DX7 and related instruments, though I've enjoyed most of it. Nothing so far, in my opinion, quite matches Brian Eno's use of the instrument, I love his sounds, but David Lawson seems to get very good sounds out of his DX too.

E.g.:

http://www.we7.com/#/album/David-Bowie/Labyrinth (the Trevor Jones tracks).

Good, IMHO, use of the layering on the DX5 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFwNA3qn-5g

Yes, it's correct that Lawson used the DX-5 for Labyrinth too, eg the bass sound on "Into the Labyrinth".

Other synths used on this score include Prophet 5 rev 2* (mainly used for the low end stuff), Oberheim OB-1 and Emulator II. The drum machine was an E-mu SP-12. There's also some Synclavier (the newer system with poly-sampling) on the score, Trevor Jones used it mainly to reproduce acoustic guitar sounds. Lawson also had a Synclavier II (the old one with mono-sampling) and it saw heavy of use on scores like Dark Crystal, Runaway train, Angel Heart and Mississipi Burning. He subsequently purchased a 9600, which he still have and a Post Pro SD which he also still own, he thinks they still sound fantastic!

Lawson played on everything that Trevor Jones did up to 'Sea of Love'. Then started again on 'GI Jane'.

If you like his synth-work I'd recommed you to check out his library music album "Current Affairs" (rec. 1980).

The Oberheim family (OB-X, 2-voice w/sequencer, OB-1 etc.) were heavily featured together with the first Linn drum machine in the country.

* Dave Simmonds did a mod on his P5 by replacing the modulation wheels with an Oberheim OB1 pitch bend lever.

Yeah that was me who mentioned that the DX7 was used a lot on Doctor Who.

Some of the other Doctor Who episodes that used the DX7 most of the time were Resurrection of the Daleks, Warriors of the Deep, Attack of the Cybermen, Vengeance on Varos and Revelation of the Daleks. the latter uses the wasp sting preset a lot throughout the episode. Also, a few years ago I received an email from one of the Radiophonic Workshop musicians who also used the DX7 while scoring Doctor Who and he told me that he met Dr John Chowning the creator of FM in California to try out the DX7. He was impressed and instantly the Radiophonic Workshop bought six of them.

It would be easier to name the pop songs from 1984---1987 that didnt have a DX7 on them. A few of my faves are Jan Hammers Crocketts Theme. And the killer bass on Michael Jacksons Another Part of me. The TX816 was used alot on the Bad album.
