Members -todgemistro-
I'm thinking of getting one of these for my strat. I've just got some BG Pickups V60s for it, and whilst the neck and middle sound great, the bridge is far too small and thin sounding in comparison. Is this the deal with most strat pickups and if so will a S90 in the bridge even out the output/fatness? They say this on the HD site: " Super 90's are a more practical alternative to modifying a guitar to fit humbucking pickups and provide a better match for single coil neck pickups." sounds promising.. so has anyone tried one? Apparently the output on my singles is 5.9-6.7k so will the balance be ok? Would the Vintage Plus be better? Cheers
Members El Guapo
Before you go spending money on pickups have you tried re-wiring the 2nd tone control to the bridge pickup?? It might help you some. If you're hell bent on switching out pickups P-90's will definitely help fatten your tone. As to wether or not they'll balance out with the single coils depends on how hot the P-90 is.
Members -todgemistro-
Yeah I have the top tone wired to neck + middle and bottom to bridge. Doesnt help the volume difference though, but helps thicken it up a little bit
Members maiden_fan
have you tried the Rio grande muy grande? The clips sound badass.
Members -todgemistro-
Nope, cant say I have. The bridge pickup I have now isnt bad, but it sounds flat and lifeless/quiet compared to the neck. I'll do a clip tomorrow to show you what I mean. Members telephant
I have one in my strat and its AMAZING!!! in fact, I have all HD pickups in my purple strat. S90 in the bridge, and the Vintage +'s in the nbeck and middle. They all sound phemomenal. I went with HD because they wound me lefty pickups for the same price as a righty. The S90 brings the fat lead tone. And actually, a lot of the HOM guys have heard them too because when I went to NYC I took that guitar with me. All those live video clips of me playing have those pickups in it. Let me dig up the vids/clips and Ill post them in a sec.
Members -todgemistro-
Oh yeah I think it was actually you who recommended them to me in the first place ages ago when I semi-hijacked someones strat thread I'm worried that the S90 will overpower my neck and middle BGs, which are just a regular/medium output I think. Sounds slightly quieter/less gainy than my LP with BK Mules which are rated around 8.4k dc res (I know dc res isnt an accurate means of measuring output but its a rough guide I guess..) Members telephant
Here is a live improv from 3 or 4 years ago with the S90 on the entire time into the Superbass. Im pretty sure the SD-1 is on as well: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=3901643&q=hi Live vid: http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=7208080 I have another clip, not here at work though, thats a perfect of example of what thew S90 sounds like double tracked, into the Superbass, with no overdrivr pedals or anything. Ill try and dig it up when I get home. I might have to bounce it down from the Pro Tool file though cause Im not sure if I still have the wav or mp3. Members telephant
Honestly I dont think it will be that much difference at all. Its not that its crazy output, its just tons of MUSCLE!!!
Members Kelly
I have 2 Fralin Vintage Hots and a Fralin SP43 in my Strat. The SP43 has almost as much output as a P90. It isn't overpowering at all, though, just fatter sounding. Killer setup.

I remember that clip, it sounds awesome, so thick My strat pickups arent exactly weedy or anything so I guess it should balance ok. If I cant get my pickups to balance out after adjusting heights etc, Bryan at BG said he'll exchange my bridge v60 for a hotter version of his v60s, the Phatty.. worth a try, as it wont cost me much more except shipping back to america, dont really know how much that'll cost. Members -todgemistro-
I think I've actually managed to balance out the levels when I switch from bridge to neck now just by adjusting the heights a bit, heres a clip http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AWD4QYW7 I love strats Thanks for the help anyway people, if I ever put together another strat it'll be a blackmore styled one with a Harmonic Design S90 in the bridge for sure, maybe the vintage plus in neck+ middle

Members -todgemistro-
Well once again I'm starting to doubt the thickness of my bridge singlecoil The other day I played my LP then my strat and the strat just sounds really thin and small on the bridge pickup (neck + middle sound awesome tho), so I think an S90 may be required Then again maybe all I need is a boost or something to fatten up the strat and boost the level a bit Thanks for the tone compliment Shea
