Research some, because I think it could work in your favor. I think. To echo what Aran is saying, I'm not quite sure if the Air Force is different, but in the Army we're on a pretty hefty rotation cycle; IE deployment could come up any time. With her being a single parent, that means your kids would have to be uprooted at a moment's notice, and I imagine you could pitch it at a judge that you definately had the more stable lifestyle. Plus if she has to go to basic for two months or so, plus MOS training, she'd be canned from being a parental figure for a while anyway. I don't know what it is with women, but when it comes to splitting up, they often just get so freakin' RANDOM. I can't tell you how many times during or after a breakup, when the woman involved has done something so out of left field that I find myself saying, "Where the f--- did THAT come from?" Doesn't matter if it screws up YOUR life. They'll just do it anyway. But where your kid is involved, I admire your attitude. If she continues down this "do whatever the hell she wants" road, it's gonna be tough, and I have no easy words of wisdom. When the crap comes down, I usually just grit my teeth and try to get through the hard times with as much calm as I can muster. Addendum: some of the other posters are right. Second, she could get duty close to home as Texas has bases I believe. The military will not allow her to just up and take kids if there is a civilian dad involved. The last thing a commanding officer needs is a pissed off father yelling at his congressman.Good luck and do not think you have no options.
