Members thrashmetl
So I'm in the market to buy a new amp and I'm looking into one in particular, but in the description of the amp the guy says it needs new tubes. He goes onto say that it fades in and out and that this is the first sign that an amp needs new tubes. I'd never heard that that was a symptom that an amp needed new tubes. Anyone have any thoughts? Is it a more serious issue or am I wrong and it actually might be the tubes?
Members thrashmetl
Power tubes going bad. This may be a retarded question, but if I'm ging to replace the power tubes should I just replace the preamp tubes at the same time or should the preamp tubes be fine? Members abecon5
if you are touring, I would just retube the whole {censored}ing amp....if you are just playing in your room, wait till the preamps blow
Members newholland
pre's last a while longer than yer power tubes-- so if they're a year old.. don't sweat it.. if they're 5 years old... sweat it.. you won't even recognize your amp- hopefully in a good way! Members newholland
Meanwhile-- what kind of amp is this-- 'cause there's a few amps that do weird things like that WITHOUT it being a tube issue!
Members thrashmetl
but just to be sure, the sound fading in and out and is more than likely the power tubes going out right?
Members newholland
I wouldn't say that necessarily- there's other things possibly afoot-- but with tube amps-- they're pretty simple critters, and a whole lot of things bizarre can get cleared up with retubing. intermittency like you're talking about isn't something i've experienced with failing power tubes- not that i'm an expert, nor that i've seen everything. BUT- that's why i asked 'what amp'? that can help winnow down other stuff!
Members thrashmetl
Another lame question, but if I was to replace the preamp tubes, do they have to be matched as well or not?

Members Hegmatronicon
Is it a head/cab? If so - check the contact on the speaker cable. Mine were dirty and the amp was fading in/out at times. Bit of contact cleaner (plastic safe of course) on em and no more fading.
