Members cozmicslop
Dave Grohl.. I can't think of anyone having more fun with the process. For a thousand reasons, he's my hero, if he never makes another record. Simplicity. He's kinda loud, tho.

Members B. Adams
Harry Chapin Bruce Springsteen James Taylor Johnny Cash Alanis Morissette Jewel Tom Waits Collective Soul Gin Blossoms Rolling Stones And anybody who wrote anything that Alison Krauss sings But as for who's my least favortite right now: R. Kelly Rob Thomas Avril Lavigne And anybody who wrote anything that Kelly Clarkson sings And you know, lately, I've been thinking that Hootie wrote some really good songs when he was with the Blowfish. Too bad they couldn't break out of that cliche they got stuck in. And yeah, I know his name isn't Hootie, but come on, when you name a band like that... Members Michael Martin
I like lots of the people others have listed. Surprised no-one has mentioned my all-time songwriting idol: Pete Townshend. Also, have long admired: Ian AndersonCat Stevens Joni MitchellRay DaviesSheryl Crow
Members Aaron Cheney
Barry Manilow would be at the top of my list for sure. That dude can write! Copa Cabana is one of my all time favorites. Sting would be up there too. Nobody writes more descriptive metaphors. Of course, Lennon and McCartney. That almost goes without saying. I'd probably have to stick Prince in there too. Members jabney
As I noted in Craig's forum, since Paul Simon hasn't released anything recently, perhaps the best songwriter working in the U.S. is Vic Chesnutt. best, John

Members Deef
Originally posted by Lee Knight P.S. Except William S. Gilbert, I don't who he is.... Well, his partner was Arthur Sullivan. The original poster was asking "who everyone here turns to for inspiration when it comes to writing lyrics", so I de-composered the duo. Members JeffreyCH
There are too many great song writers to list, but I'd say that between the 60's and now, they all owe a great deal to Dylan. I don't think anyone has come close to him as far as lyrics go.

Ever heard his solo disc, "Ten Easy Pieces"? All the hits as performed by the writer. Jimmy's book on songwriting is also excellent...
