Members ENdtime
Yeah, arent you using pretty much what Dougs Tubes recommends? Probably a pretty damn good setup.. Ive got mostly JJ's & Sovteks in mine right now. I might try that Dougs setup, or call Lord Valve & see what he recommends. Both are pretty good guys.. From what I see Doug recommends the EXACT same thing(or {censored}ing close to it) for every amp. Sorry, that doesnt mean {censored} to me. For my 5150's I like JJ's and Sovteks in the preamp both head and combo, in fact I think I got some EH's in the head too. Those can be real good, or real bright. Gotta find the good ones. In the head the Ruby 6L6's are really good. In my combo I like JJ's, Sovtek WXT+, and Winged C's in the power section. And FWIW, I hate the Tung Sol 12ax7's in 5150's. At first I noticed a big change, so I was impressed but then I quickly realized how grainy they really sounded.

When I finally took mine out in place of the Mullard why didn't I do this earlier?!?

Hm so the mullard in the far right pre amp socket sounded better than the Tung Sol?? Can you get any more specific, Would you say you would rather keep the tung sol out completely, or move it down the line and keep it in there still? Can you get any more specific, Would you say you would ratherkeep the tung sol out completely, or move it down the line andkeep it in there still? It was all a matter of taste for me, I really really like the Penta tubes and figured that adding the tung sol down the line would take away from the penta's more balanced clear sound (remember IMO). I find that the Mullard made the 5150 more articulate, not as harsh and grainy maybe a little grainy but not much. I really liked that grainy sound but it was just missing something:idk: till I tried the mullard 12AX7... Meh I may change ideas again but I've liked this setup since March (when it was put in). I have a hard time describing a tube's sound and what not, it's more or less I try it out and I like it or I don't.
Members awhisperofred
I run the full retube kit from Eurotubes with the KT66's and 6L6GC's in my 5150II, not the high gain one, just the normal one. I think it sounds {censored}ing killer.

Ummm I'm not positive but running KT66 and 6L6's at the same time, umm isn't that a recipe for disaster?:poke:

Members Iron Lotus
Well I ordered a regular ECC83S to replace the Tungsol, And a GOLD PIN ECC83S to go in the next slot... So from right to left my tubes will be... --ECC83S--ECC83S Gold--Tung Sol 12ax7--Penta 12ax7--Balanced Sovtek LPS (i really love this tube for the PI) And the Powers will still be Ruby 6l6mstr running at 32 mA. This should smooth out the boxy midrange and clean things up a bit.

Members Iron Lotus
Well havent been able to crank em yet, But I got the new tubes today. So its like this from right to left*..JJ ecc83s*..JJ ecc83s Gold Pin*..Tung Sol 12ax7*..Penta Labs 12ax7*..Balanced Sovtek 12ax7lps Ive only been able to turn it up to volume level 1. I can tell its alot more warmer even at that, I hopeit doesnt sound TOO warm at 3-4 volume whenI get back to practice. IF its too warm thenit will probably sound too cloudy and I will haveto switch something around or run the power tubesa little colder to get some grind... But Hopefully wheni turn it up it will be smoother, Yet still brutal as hell. The 18V mod to my 81/60 is sounding pretty dank as well. And STILL waiting on my ts9 (adverse weather is what UPSsaid, It is like a week late). Gonna mod it as soon as I get it to 808. And that will probably impact the sound a little as well, Hopefull itwill match up to the combo of tubes I have now and I can stop messing with {censored}. Members Guiary
I just tried a 5751 in V4 (PI) slot and WOW! I don't know about the rest of you but it gave the amp more crunch, smoother, and nice harmonics. If you've got one hanging around I'd suggest throwing it into your phase inverter and see what you think.
Members Iron Lotus
Man.... My amp sounded KILLER tonight. VERY tight. Nice and clear, really heavy chugs with great crunch too. It sounds just right. Without the Ts9 on it is warmer.. Ts9 on and it has the perfect amount of depth and clarity for lower tuned metal riffage. The ECC83s In the far right spot really sounds good, The Ecc83 gold pin in the 2nd spot from right, Really smooths things out too. I NO LONGER have the boxy sound I get when volume at 4 and up. It is like night and day when I turn it up to 4 and 5 it sounds BRUTAL. Very crisp and tight. My EQ settings were Lows-5.5, Mid-5, Highs-4.5 Pregain on 4 on the lead channel. 3-5 on post gain (volume) Resonance at 4 or 5, Presence between 3 and 0. Sounds great, Very warm. Throw the TS-9 in there with the different resistors for 808. (havent installed the chip yet). Still sounds great I had it set like this... (1-10 like an amp knob) Drive - 1 Tone - 0 to 3 Level - 9 Really smooth but still a little edgy. Just right for me:love: I love my setup all over again. The 18 volt emg mod really gave it more clarity and detail. That with the new choice of tubes really made this thing thick. Very aggressive without being harsh. Feels great. Tubes are from right to left... JJ ecc83s JJ ecc83s gold pin Tung Sol 12ax7 Penta Labs 12ax7 Balanced sovtek lps Powers, Same ruby 6l6gcmstr's running around 32mA Like I said... I love my tone over what it was. It seems to have the best of both worlds now or something:love:

Members Guiary
Dude, I dont think Ive talked to you since you got your head BACK from Jerry. So whats the verdict? Hey!! Ya sorry about that couple of projects on the way, trying to mod a VTM for myself and decided to make my own cables, well piece them together using Mogami cable and Neutrik connectors. There was no way I was willing to spend $70ish for decent cables so might as well make my own.... Anyway, the amp rocks! utterly rocks! Clear and tight low end, very articulate too! Forces me to clean up on my chops. It just sounds like a savage beast when palm muting. Nice mid growl (but what 5150 doesn't?). My man concerns before I sent the amp off was to clean it up and tighten everything up and that's what he did. I honestly would do it all again in a heart beat! It was probably the best thing I could ever do!

And Cables, yeah that too is a good thing. I started doing mine.. GH, Switchcraft, or Neutrik ends, & whatever good cable. I got some kinda Carol & it works great. One CAN hear the difference.. Members Guiary
Alright I've gone through a decent Ebay binge and ordered a bunch of older tubes. Now I have no idea if they'll sound better or worse but since I've heard such mixed reactions I want to see if there is any difference first hand. These are the tubes coming in: (all 12AX7's)2- Amperex bugle boy 12AX72- Telefunken Ribbed plate1- Mullard marked IEC1- Telefunken long plate ribbed2- Mullard CV4004 So I'm going in this a little blind with only assumptions of where I want each to go but we'll see... right? I'm open to suggestions as to which tube in which spot, so tube guru's help/suggestions would be great! Or I'll be spending a couple of hours tube rolling. Thanks, Gary

Members Ciula
Hi.Meyby someone can help to get more soft sound in the middle?Mine pre is:1st from right - Rhythm channel pre tube(JJ ec83s)2nd from right - 1/2 Lead 1/2 rhythm pre tube(JJ ec83s)3rd from right - Lead pre tube(JJ ec83s)4th from right - Lead pre tube(JJ ec83s)5th from right - effects loop tube(12ax7 EH)6th from right - Phase inverter(12ax7 EH) I was trying with one ecc81 in V4 but sound was too soft, without dynamic. So now ecc81 is in V2,its better, but still to hard in mids, besides its with ecc81 its more "sand" in the sound, but its new,so meyby from that. I'm thinking about 5751 instead 12ax7 in some slot, meyby tube with less resistance in PI will be helpfull? Anyone have ideas?cheers folks
