This week's challenge will be Song for "Gettin' it On." Kinda cheesy, but it should yield some interesting results. Marvin Gaye, Nine Inch Nails, 70's porno music, polka, whatever this means to you.

If you're planning on contributing to this challenge, please have your submission in by Wednesday, October 3 (two weeks from now), when a new challenge will be posted.

Submissions for this challenge and future challenges will be a bit different. Please PM me links to your submissions, and then on October 4 I will post a new thread with a list of the songs, the author, and respective links to the songs. This thread can be used for discussion on this week's challenge.

Again, this is intended as a way for some of us less experienced songwriters to get some practice writing something with certain restrictions before a certain deadline to hopefully learn skills and get a little closer to mastering our craft. You're free to put as much or as little time into your submission as you feel necessary. However, if you make a submission, please critique others' submissions for that challenge, keeping in mind that the focus is more on songwriting and arranging, and less on production.

I think that's about it. If anyone has any good suggestions on genres, etc for the next challenge, shoot me a PM.

Also, just a reminder that the 2nd challenge is gonna remain open-ended, so feel free to make a submission in that thread here if you come up with one.

Happy writing everyone.

it's funny; but i was just listening to marvin gaye's "let's get it on" a week ago after a late nite gig....thinking about how he created that mood.....if you check that song out and look past the sex novelty of it, it's a SERIOUSLY successful production with all the backing voices. marvin was a PEEEEIMP! lol. ....and a bit of a TOTAL musical badass....{censored}ing fathers with guns.

.....i'm in for this one, too. i already have my sex song "bed under the stars," but i'm going to work on another in the spirit of the deadline.

PS - radiation, still waiting on your comedy tune, man! i love that you started doing this.

I love Marvin's version to death, but I also have a special place in my heart for Jack Black's version at the end of "High Fidelity".:thu:

This one's already in the can and has been for about 6 or 7 years -- so it is not an official entry...

I just thought it was pretty on the nose so I thought I'd post it:

Pretty Little Head

Babe I've been alone for such a long time

this loneliness tearin' me apart

I got pain in my head and a fire in my loins

and a whole lot of empty in my heart

If you had a thought in your pretty little head

Then maybe we could talk

today we're alive tomorrow we're dead

so I think right now we'd better rock

I look in your eyes and I wonder what

is going on in your mind

Are you really where you are

or where you'll be tomorrow night?

your leg touches mine beneath the table

I feel your hand slide up my thigh

I feel kinda dizzy I feel kinda high

I feel like I'm gonna die

If you had a thought in your pretty little head

Then maybe we could talk

today we're alive tomorrow we're dead

so I think right now we'd better rock

That's one big advantage in being an old fart - you can always dredge something up from somewhere. I say it should count - PM RadiationNation for final arbitration.

Besides GJ only got 3 submissions for last months coverfest - surely we can top that!

Oh... I don't care if other people want to pull out stuff, myself -- but, of course, this is RadiationNation's baby, so he should properly be the final arbiter, seems to me.

But it seems to me the whole point of the challenge is to prod some of us low-productivity types into sitting down and writing and recording new stuff.

So, even it the challenge was open to stuff that had been in the can for the better part of a decade, I still don't think I'd submit this...

That's some fairly non-standard notation you got there, eagle!

But... if my interpretive skills are correct I'd say that's a slow but funky groove, with wah wah, jazzy organ, a slightly syncopated beat, and maybe a little discreet sax.

That's sax. With an "a"...
