1.
Dave Matthews
: I have no idea how this guy got a recording contract. Is this music?

2.
Alanis Morrisette
: You can only sing those simple melodies, annoying falsettos and stupid lyrics so many times. No real musicality here. She was interviewed on "Tavis Smiley" last month and said she wrote 22 songs in 20 days in the studio and said that songs "just keep coming out of me".

3.
Sting
: Biggest mumbler of lyrics.

4.
John Mayer
: One of the worst "singers". Pretends to be a significant guitar player. Shameful.

5.
Sheryl Crow
: At best a satisfactory singer. Poor/weak tone in her voice. At best a satisfactory songwriter. She got her recording contract thanks to her old boss Eric Clapton.

6.
KISS
: Not rock-n-roll, not music, just a Halloween party + ego.

1. I don't like Dave either, but I totally understand how he got to where he is. He has a distinctive vocal melody in a talented band.

3. Meh, sting, the police in general, are overrated. Nonetheless I can still see the appeal.

4. John Mayer can play the guitar extremely well, and he writes meaningful lyrics.

I completely understand why these people are popular.

PPPPS... I'm surprised no one has mentioned Modest Mouse, I don't think. I
love
MM but it seems to me a lot of folks hate them. Weird voice. Weird lyrics. Weird instrumentation.
Banjo
. Tough sell for those raised on musical Wonder Bread.

I thought their latest album was pretty good but nothing really jumped out at me.

Btw I am surprised nobody has mentioned smashing pumpkins (I enjoy them myself).

In response to 1. If you listen to early Incubus which combines jazz, funk, metal, and rap singing you'll see that some of the alt metal has merit. Bands like Limp Bizket gave it a bad name.

In reponse to 8. Ya the hole straight edge thing got out of hand but it produced some good bands(Refused for example).

Sorry, but Sheryl Crow is a genius; I'm sure any of us would settle for half of her ability to write a song. Sting is one of the best lyricists out there (he can write a short story with only a few words--paints wonderful pictures). Alanis, just damn talented (like her music or not).

It took me a while to get Nirvana. I think it was the unplugged sessions that finally did it for me. You could hear that Cobain really did sing with a lot of passion. As obscure as the lyrics were, he delivered them like he really
meant
them.

I don't think Kurt was really concerned with creating coherent lyrics. In fact I'm pretty sure I heard that in an interview somewhere, he was more concerned with melody.

On one level, I sometimes don't get "rock music" in general. To me, a lot of it is performance art that _utilizes_ music. The music in rock isn't supposed to be isolated, and therein lies my problem, because I've never been part of the "scenes". "Rock experience" makes more sense to me, if I think about it that way. I heard a Nirvana song and didn't quite "get it". Later, I realised the grunge fashion and the sort of way-of-life, and their lyrics spoke to people---the college students. Fair enough, I can see how that could be fun. On the other hand, metal "shredding" I can understand completely, and find interesting in its own right.

To be more on topic, I must say I never, ever, understood the appeal of Bob Dylan. I found the songs too simple to be interesting, and his lyrics never spoke to me, and I never liked his voice. Joni Mitchell, on the other hand, I absolutely love.

I'd like to steer this back towards a songwriting related topic. I write of some pretty horrific scenarios, not exactly like Cannibal Corpse. When I write this stuff it is often for the contrast. What I mean by that is if you read say a Dean Koonts book you'll notice he is actually verry positive. Even though there are some verry {censored}ed up things happening in his stories. I choose to point out the good in humanity by showing it's verry worst. How can you truely appreciate the good in people without know the depths their potential for evil?

I pretty much think this is a BS thread, which is why I haven't posted on it till now. I am somewhat intrigued by your last sentence:

How can you truely appreciate the good in people without know the depths their potential for evil?

I am fascinated by this sort of thing. Do you have any examples of your own writings that express this dialectic? Any tidbits you feel like sharing?

Fall Out Boy - One HUGE WTF? They're a generic MTV band, so what do you expect... The lead singer's voice sounds like a dying cat and the lyrics never make sense. Half the time you can't even understand what he's singing!

This video comes to mind:

I don't understand the popularity of bands like Fallout Boy and Nickelback. How can bands like that churn out crap year after year, and remain popular and having platinum albums? It makes no sense! And Creed. Mark Tremonti is a good player, but why did people buy into an Eddie Vedder ripoff (Scott Stapp)? The same people who worship in their shrines the MTV bands of today (Nickelback, Fallout Boy, Trapt) will be the same ones destroying evidence of their worship when they wake up and realize that the commercialism that appealed for a brief moment has up and vanished. Another appropriate thread to post, which is mere suggestion, would be Name an artist whom you never understood the reason of their being under the radar. There are far more talented artists that deserve recognition, and deserve our praise and adoration than the flavor of the week mess that has polluted our airwaves. Thank you.

I agree with Pink Floyd. My bandmate absolutely adores the band and i really dont like them at all. He tries to write crazy lyrics like theres and mine are much more simple are straightforward. He'll come up with this trippy guitar lick that sounds really gay and i cant imagine being used in anything but an acid trip. It really bothers me how he tries to write like them.

And Jonas Brothers. Theyre not even attractive young lads selling on sex appeal liek N'Sync or something. Theyre ugly. And crappy. And there the biggest band in America.

But thank god I have Muse to make all the bad music stay away!
