detroit is like heaven

you got everything you need

whiskey store a pharmacy

a guy who sells you weed

watch it through the windshield

watch it on TV

keep on rolling 'til the wheels fall off

call me up when you make it to gratiot

call me up when you wake at the light

call me up when your heart starts beating

let me know everything's alright

detroit is like heaven

you can't feel your hands and feet

rolling in your silver honda

it knows all your streets

floating past the silent windows

rolling down the stream

keep on rolling 'til the wheels fall off

call me up when you want to feel normal

call me up when the noose gets tight

call me up and I'll tell you a story

make you feel like you'll be alright

never count on anything

never count to seven

tell me something I don't know

detroit is like heaven

I like these lyrics a lot... with the right music this could really work, I think.

Unless... of course... it was done as whiny emo... :D

I especially liked these lines...why a Honda?...is that a little dig at Detroit?...I see your stuff is a little irreverent and that is cool...just thought a Chevrolet or Ford Truck or Jimmie would fit better...JMO...you write well...:)

Does happen to be a Honda but any such reference carries something with it.

When I've suggested I am careless in my writing I mean I do not contemplate the consequences of saying what I wish to say.

The writing itself is done very consciously and with as much awareness as I can bring to it.

As Kay noted, in this case it's just a Honda because it's a Honda.

I grew up mostly in that area in the 60's and 70's, that is where my family lived. There was always an great awareness of the importance of the auto industry and our culture was very much defined by this fact.

I would not take a shot or dig at Detroit. Maybe (God forbid) in Detroit, but not at Detroit. It was my home for a while in my late teens and a very good place for me at the time. My memories of and feelings for the city are good.

The lines you reference describe someone in a blackout who drives home and then does not remember the drive. It describes that odd passivity of consciousness.

Thanks for your comments. :)

If Ms Kay doesn't get the references... how can we be expected to???

:D;):D

Happily, I think I would have got the backstory Red gives us later in the thread in a few more listens/reads -- it's actually very coherently written and all the details point nicely into the backstory.

Seems to me this has a nice blend of on-message coherence, somewhat open-ended images (I like being flung off in different directions a little on the way... digression is a big part of my world... obviously), and hooky images and phrases.

I'd love to hear how this one works with music.

if this is about detroit, do it up Punky...

And there are LOTS of songs that have references no one but the writer gets but the listener's mind will adapt it to their own point of reference.

 myredshoes and I were discussing this issue a little while ago and iirc he came out on the opposite side of the issue.

Oh yeah, and another great lyric btw.
