Just about any beatles song will work but for me the piano intro and the opening lines are killer to me:

Lady Madonna

Lady madonna, children at your feet.
Wonder how you manage to make ends meet.
Who finds the money? when you pay the rent?
Did you think that money was heaven sent?

Interesting -- and somewhat parallel -- thread developing over in Craig's forum: http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?p=32250177&posted=1

And, back in this thread:

Looking something else up a few minutes ago, I found out that the great hit version of "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" by the Temptations was not the original version of that fine slice-of-life song. The soul group, The Undisputed Truth, had an earlier version that didn't make many waves at all. It's a nice version -- but it lacks the long, intoxicating dub-style (as we'd call it now) intro of the Temp's version. And I think it's that build up and that sleek late night feel that really puts their version over.

Another great intro: "I'll Take You There" -- from the very first four bars, it tells you that you're going to be getting into some very funky stuff. A lot of the Staples stuff had great intros, of course. Great hooks, great intros. Great little family outfit.

The simple piano chord motif then Harry sings...

No I can't forget the feeling, or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that's just the way the story goes...

It's start is in a major key. But the voicing is really unique. Simple. By the time he sings "the way the story goes..." the chords have switched to the V chord of the minor. In C, it then goes to the E7, setting up the very sad Am "You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows..." and you know it's not going to end well for Harry.

And the meek shall inherit the earth

Rush 2112

I'm not sure why, but those opening lines have stuck in my brain all these years. I was very young when I first heard that with my brother and I remember becoming impatient with the extended musical opening. I wanted singing, man. But when I heard Geddy sing that, then they immediaetly broke into the next sequence, I was hooked. That's the definition of a hook, though isn't it?

It may not rank up there very high in most lists, but for me, it was the one hook that always stuck with me.

Actually, that line is the end of the Overture rather than the beginning of Temples. But, I guess we can consider it an intro for these purposes.

Other Rush intros that kill me:

Tom Sawyer

The Big Money

This is a song that I've been reacquainting myself with. Somehow the Badfinger original doesn't properly milk the song the way Harry's does.

Really melodic verses seem to be uncommon these days. This song's verses have a melody as distinct as the chorus, imo.

You are correct. I brought it in because they are the opening lyrical lines to the overall piece. That, plus it rocks.

Oh my god, Becky, look at her butt

It is so big

She looks like one of those rap guys girlfriends

Who understands those rap guys

They only talk to her because she looks like a total prostitute, ok?

I mean her butt

It's just so big

I can't believe it's so round

It's just out there

I mean, it's gross

Look, she's just so black
