Your Best Line

I don't mean: "You must be a speeding ticket, cuz you got 'fine' written all over you."

What is the single best line (or lines) ever to come forth from your fertile brain?

Alternately, what is the best line of any song, ever? Doesn't have to be the greatest song ever, or even the best verse. Just a line or a couplet that really grabbed you by the throat and made to say "Hmm."

I have a few favorites.. some are going to waste in songs that will never be played again.

example:

Cities rise and cities fall

in the shadows on my wall

I was depressed a bit when I wrote that.. I stayed in my bed for a few days..every time a car would pass, the shadows on my wall would change..

I put this one in this song, but I need to rework the song. It was recorded a few years back when I was in that awkward "I'm getting better and I need to show everything I've learned" faze.

http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=1301522&q=hi&newref=1

The sky is falling

I am standing still

the world is coming down

to break my will

My favorite line I've written was from my song Falling for years..2 lines from that song actually..

I came up with

Now she's lost. Now she's craving. Now she's not. Not worth saving.

and I built a song around it. I kind of surprised myself with this line

Tears have long since dried

canyons formed and left behind

When I first wrote it, I didn't really realize how deep those two lines were. That is somebody that has grown to accept their failed life.. that no longer cries.. no longer hopes. The song is about a woman on the surface, but it's about my real father beneath. Those lines helped me see him as a real person and not just a series of stories(mostly bad).

Oh and my favorite line from any song of all time.. off the top of my sleep deprived head

"Mommas got a squeeze box. Daddy doesn't sleep at night!"

I forgot my own. D'oh.

From "Jerry Mac"

Old Jerry Mac loved to play them country blues

And he smoked them strings just like a burning fuse

And

From "Woman From the South Side of Heaven"

There are saints among us still

And they teach us with great skill

If we'll listen closely enough to hear

From Yes' "Turn of the Century"

Time has caught her and will for all reasons take her

In the still light of dawn she dies

Helpless hands so revealing

The night was hot and I was full of dreams

I was making love for the very first time

I put up a smoke screen I was just thirteen

I threw myself into the summer fire

...you can listen here

The summer fire.

A very cool way of expressing that with a creative line. Sweet.

From a song I wrote some time ago, I never really cared for the song as a whole but I always liked the lyrics to the bridge:

With each kiss the silence grows

It's more reflex than meaning by this point

A crush of skin familiar against a girl so foreign

Your eyes staring lifelessly is the image I remember

My wife asked me a couple nights ago, what song this line was from... I stood there kind of dumbstruck because it was my song, and she usually hates those. So I have to post her favorite line, from a heavy metal song I did like 15 years ago....

From "Half an Hour"

I love to think that I think too much, but I rarely find the time

I must insist it is my principle affliction- how do I stop these brassy hands of mine?

It's not my personal fav though... right now, it's is probably this one....

From "Prague"

The lines across your face have come and gone and come again

Your old crown has housed the jewels of a thousand men

I'd like to see you in the rain and the redemption it would bring

Beauty carved in stone, dignified by horrible things

It's a hard question- my 'best line' changes with my mood. The one I sing the most is from a song I wrote that another forumite (Cripes) put to music. His vocal melody on this refrain just blows me away, plus I really like the lines:

From "Into the Busy Abyss"

Tumble long, feet overhead

You reach out too, I'm out of bed

Love comes round, by and by

I wasted time chasing mine

Shameless plug if you want to hear it: http://media.putfile.com/Into-The-Busy-Abyss-Sentry68-Cripes

My friends' favorite line of mine is one from a song "Potatohead" about a guy I went to college with who would disagree with anything you said, just because he was that guy. (pardon my french)

You're mouth's an asshole with a leak,

and we're mere victims of the spray

My personal fav of mine is the pre-chorus from a newer song that my band hasn't finished in the studio yet.

The parchment bleeds sincerely. The fear is underscored.

I'm rediscovering myself discovering you.

My favorite line from someone else is a Daniel Johns lyric from the song "Tuna in the Brine"

The light in my darkest hour is fear

I'm seriously contemplating getting that tattoo'd on my arm. Love that line.

Counting the shadows of memories long past

You want them to stay but you know it won't last

You shined in your glory but the sunlight is gone

as the fire fases to ashes the darkness lives on

:blah::blah::blah:

The memories of a man in his old age

are the deeds of a man in his prime

You shuffle in the gloom of a sick room

and talk to yourself as you die

and life is a short warm moment

and death is a long cold rest

you get your chance to try

in the twinkling of an eye

with 80 of luck or even less

from Pink Floyd's song.. "Free Four" off of..... Obscured by Clouds

Very slick. You have very goodly command of speaking nice.

Here's a couple more o mine:

The cobwebs in my mind grudgingly disappeared

I could move again without spasmodic fear

From "You Leave Me Blue"

He was smoking cigarettes and playing cards

Til the morning light

He separated men from the money in their pocket

With much delight

And Long Tall Oklahoma Paul

Had a countenance of stone that would make men fall

In a rich man they would walk and out a poor one they would crawl

Alone at the end of the night

From "Long Tall Oklahoma Paul"

Not just a line, but I'm fond of the entire chorusy thing there.
