Considering it finished

True to an extent. At some point you need to become satisfied enough with a song to record it, but look at the way Bob Dylan has changed the arrangements of all his songs over the years. Have you heard the 1965 live electric version of "It Ain't Me, Babe?" Stellar.

I've been trying not to stick a fork in em until I've played them live a few times. If an audience of friends is uninspired by a song, then it probably needs more work. After that though, once I've recorded it, and I'm happy with it, I try not to worry too much about it. I think it would be pretty stressful to always be worrying about songs that you've got recorded and done. Of course they could always be changed up for live performances, and continue to evolve. But as far as a recording, sooner or later it needs to be called "done", and move on.
