me.

It's free. Join online.

You can also use your ASCAP card to get discounts and Musicians Friend.

You bet. Last time I thought to mention it, I got an addtional 5% discount. I actually carry my ASCAP card in my wallet (I love to flash it at parties when I ask host or hostess if they paid for all the music we're listening to :D ).

Of course, like all professional organizations, it's an example of a granfalloon (or false-karass). But it's fun to belong in a totally arbitrary way. And, for some reason, I occasionally even get small checks. (I've been told it's likely more related to class action judgments, and such, rather than likely to be any sort of compensation for streams and radio play. But, well, who knows? It's bought me a couple cups of coffee over the last decade. :D )

The site says 35.00 bucks to join...has anybody made that back yet?!!
:facepalm::)

Oof.

It was free when I joined, c. 1999 or 2000. I actually was looking to join BMI but ASCAP was able to come up with an online service first and BMI seemed, at the time, to have a disorganized, haphazard web presence.

I'm in. ASCAP sends me small checks every quarter.

The smallest one was for less than a dollar as I recall.

The largest one was for about thirty-dollars.

I've never cashed any of them yet.

One reason I never cashed them is that sometimes,

ASCAP mixes me up with some Christian Rock songwriter

who has a similar name. They send me his royalty checks.

They're just as small as mine. I've called ASCAP.

They told me to put it in writing. I put it in writing. I've sent

the checks back. They still do it.

Now I just throw the stupid checks in the trash.

Even if they are for me, the amounts are so small,

that I just pitch them. If ASCAP ever gets around

to sending me a large check -- I will be more than

happy to cash it, assuming it's for MY music and

not for someone else's. But ASCAP has been sending

me checks for 5 or 6 years. And I have never cashed one.

That money is still sitting in ASCAP's bank account.

It's not a ripoff. But it doesn't do you any good unless you have a

big name already. But if you do, I understand it does a lot of good.

So maybe the best approach is to become a big name & then join ASCAP.

If you're a nobody - ASCAP is no help at all. And if it starts

sending you checks - make sure it's actually for your music

and not for someone else's.

Please send me my money.
