Well this started out as something way different than where it has ended up. Let me know what you think. i am pretty happy with it and it rolled out really really easy for me and sounds good in my head.

First Night

Cigarette butts in the bottom of a can

Broken Voice

Trembling hands

I know you and you are me

Neither one of us

Can see

That one slip leads us

Straight down the hole

(just a short musical interlude)

So this is where the bottom begins

Merry go round

of loser friends

Hardened faces, sunken skies

Looking in

a lost man's eyes

Even the bone collector

Don't want these souls

(chorus)

What they're selling

ain't always bought

Some crimes are

never caught

No one said it was gonna be any fun

Asking for God

for the angels to sing

Talk til you're blue

Don't mean a thing

But at least that first night is finally done

(verse)

So now the worlds turned upside down

Topsy turvy

Turned around

Thoughts are black, then they're white

Blues and green not worth the fight

Echoes of the light

shine off

the floor

(chorus)

(verse)

Past is the past or so it seems

Shadows sneaking

In a dream

Spinning heads can't keep it straight

Lord I hope its not to late

to fix whats

been broken

for so long

(chorus)

(final tag lines to end song)

Another cup of coffee and come back next week

Another cup of coffee and come back

Another cup of coffee

(and fade)

Well let me preface it by saying I have never been but It is about what I think it must be like that first time someone goes to rehab/AA meeting and they are looking around and their thought processes of I shouldn't be here, maybe I should, I can't do this, etc....

Having quite a bit of experience with addiction, I can say that this line is particularly good:

Spinning heads can't keep it straight

Lord I hope its not to late

to fix whats

been broken

for so long

This isn't quite as accurate.

Bloodshot faces, sunken skies

Looking in

a dead man's eyes

Even the bone collector

Don't want these souls

Anxiety is normal for a first timer, but for most travellers of this road the meetings are a time of serenity and acceptance. Their faces would probably be better described as "hardened" than "bloodshot" or "sunken".

An apropo line I still think of regularly is "Religion is for those who are afraid of hell. Spirituality is for those who have seen it." I'd build around that more, personally. If you're looking to sell the drama, do it more from the point of view of the protagonist and less the other members.

Oh, and coffee. {censored}loads of coffee. Cigarettes too. But more coffee.

What I was going for with the "bloodshot faces" stanza is the guy looking around at the others and passing judgement on those in the group as he sees them and not wanting to think of himself as one of them. Like he isn't in bad a shape as them. Kinda "if that person doesn't stop he will die but not me"
