Stickboy Challenge: write a song that's under a minute long

Stickboy's first challenge (before doing it on a monthly basis) was to try to write a song that's under a minute long.

"New Pair of Shoes"

I got a new pair of shoes.

I'm losin' my barefoot blues.

I'm struttin' in style,

sportin' a smile,

happy to share the news.

I felt bad when you left me

but now I don't care.

I've got a new pair of shoes.

(music to come)

Your 'New pair of shoes' reminded me of this anecdote :

About this time last year, when I took up songwriting, my newly-met musician buddy walked into my workplace for a bit of a jam, wearing a new hat.

He asked me how I liked it, and I joshed him a little about it, and when he left, I wrote this :

Brand new hat

I just got a brand new hat

The old one died on me

So what do you think of that

Do you like what you see?

My hat stays firmly on my head

I wear it in the bath

It's on my head when I make love

And stays put when I laugh

All day while I do my work

My hat stays on tight

It's still there when I'm to bed

And fall asleep at night

I could use a brand new head

The old one's not that good

If I found a head that fits

I'd buy it if I could.

Wrote this for this today. When I was almost done, discovered my basement full of water from a water line break. I am in Maine. Cold. Yikes.

Where's My Hair?

©2012 Rick Dieffenbach

When I am playing this guitar

I'm a rising star

Up on the stage

and I can see out far

But one thing that keeps me from my destiny

Is something someone had taken from me

Where's my hair? where's my hair?

It's got to be found somewhere

Where's my hair? where's my hair?

And brother do you have a spare?

new shoes

new hat

new hair

my trophy wife's on display over there

my Humvee's in the shop

I got a spare

And Testarosas...

I got a matching pair

my villa's on that hill

over there

and what flows downhill

I don't care

work and paying taxes

is for squares

I'm far too smart

to sweat or share

Okay, here's my contribution, with a recording.

I've got a new pair of shoes.

I'm losin' those barefoot blues.

Struttin' in style,

sportin' a smile,

happy to share the news.

I was sad when you left me.

Now I don't care.

I've got a new pair of shoes.

I've got a new pair of shoes.

I've got a new pair of shoes...

1st verse a solid attention getter.

And I got to learn what a Testarosas is. Wish I had 2.

The only thing that struck me a touch odd was the melody of the very last line of the song, didn't sound like an end, it sounded like a cut off. But it could be my ears.

For inspiration-- don't forget The Minutemen! 'Double Nickles on the Dime' album has 35 songs, almost all between one and two minutes. They didn't quite live up to their name, but they came pretty close! : )

One of my favorite bands, without question. I met and talked to D and Mike just when they were putting the band together. It was outside an 'underground' show in Long Beach during a break. Me and the lead guitarist from my band ended up talking to them for a while. That was an exciting time. I found D's guitar playing to be really hip. Well, heck, they were all really good players coming out the gate.
