Christmas song?

In that yesterday, June 25, was Halfway-to-Christmas Day, I decided to get an early start on writing a holiday song. Jotted down this simple and rough-ish lyric as visions of tunes danced in my head. Most of them kind of generic so I'll have to work on that part a good bit.

A SONG OF CHRISTMAS

verse 1:

Sing me a song of Christmas

Sing me a carol of cheer

I'll get into the spirit

I'll have no time for a tear

Sing me a song of Christmas

Let me be happy a while

I'll put aside these worries

And I'll put on a smile

chorus:

Sing me a song of Christmas

Remind me I belong

Sing of all that's right

In a world that seems wrong

Sing it everywhere

I'll try to sing along

Sing me a song of Christmas

I'll join in that song

verse 2:

Sing me a song of Christmas

Whatever morrow may be

I'll try to remember the tune

And carry it with me

Sing of Christmas morning

The end of every fear

Oh, sing me a song of Christmas

Sing me a carol of cheer

repeat chorus

I could see that working really well.

"Sing me a song of Christmas" made my brain go to "Sing us a song, you're the piano man." The following line, "Sing me a carol of cheer" reinforced that melody in my head.

I think what you have has the potential to be really good, but when pairing a melody to this set of words, it will be tough to not fall into the melody from Piano Man. Those words have a natural cadence that fits really well with what Billy Joel did with them.

As Rick Mentioned Christmas songs rely heavily on melody. You'll need something that sounds natural, is easy to sing along with, is catchy as hell, and stands on its own merit.

Oh no, now Piano Man will be stuck in my head! ;) I do hate that song!

Yes, I know it will take a good melody. I've been playing around with tunes but nothing has smitten me yet. That's the way...sometimes it comes immediately, sometimes it's next year!
