No news too trivial, no bragging right too small. Whether your latest triumph was a multi-album deal or a good night at your local open mic -- there's room to talk about it here...
:)

Here's this month's
Official Showcase Thread
where you can post your
completed projects
, links to
finished works
(even
old
ones) you want your pals here in the SW forum to hear,
promo videos
, covers of other people's songs, or just generally
shameless self-hype
that you're
far too professional
and courteous to post in the main forum.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: the
HC SWF Facebook page
is also available for posting your finished work, vids, carreer news, etc.
Feel free to post
here
and
there, if you like.

The moderator told me to post here....I think. I'm always looking for someone to take my lyrics and make a real song out of them. I would love to hear your music. I have the equipment to make a demo, but I'm only an average guitar player and a below average singer. I'll be Bernie Taupin, you be Elton John.

[you must have been not very challenging at hide-and-seek when you were a kid. :D moderator blue2blue found this and moved it here -- like you knew he would. ;) -- blue2blue ]

I know I've been a bad boy and haven't been around much lately - too busy working and then off to Barcelona for a couple of weeks vacation - but just in case anyone is interested I'm doing a live radio session on Friday 3rd August at (approx) 7:20 pm UK time (so, around 2:20pm EST, 11:20am PST for the 'merkins here). It's on Carnival FM which has an interwebby-listen-live thingy at http://www.carnivalfm.co.uk/. As it's local radio they've asked me to play my local songs - 3 of them, all about Hastings. I'd prefer to do some of my others but hey, it's the radio and I'm not about to argue with them :)

It'll be my first live radio session so it's a bit scary. Wish me luck and do feel free to tune in and listen (if you promise not to laugh at any mistakes I may make).

Okay - gratuitous plug over. Carry on. :)

LOL. Talk about hiding in plain sight.

OK... Mr Showboat -- we got a place for you! The current Showcase thread, here you come/go/whatever. :D

BTW, big congrats!

Remember kids, the Showcase Thread RISES to the top of the post list with every new post.

Whereas a locked thread sinks like a stone.

Consider that, and then consider that I am the most misanthropic person in this forum (and have the god-like powers of a moderator) and while I'll laugh stuff off for a little while, eventually, I will get ticked off. And that's not pretty.

Now, I can already hear the wheels grinding in folks' heads... but, the Showcase Thread -- it's all filled with people's blatant self-promo! No one's interested in that!

Ahem.

;)

PS... now everyone go listen to our forum homie, Surrealistic: "Friday 3rd August at (approx) 7:20 pm UK time (so, around 2:20pm EST, 11:20am PST for the 'merkins here). It's on Carnival FM which has an interwebby-listen-live thingy at http://www.carnivalfm.co.uk/"

Our biggest fan (outside of family) died in a car wreck early yesterday morning
:(
. On the good news side, we've got 4 gigs in the next week or so, including a private party and our first casino booking.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend.

Cherish every day.

I think he's looking for someone to write a tune to his words, Justin.

It's tempting...

I took a fly at this... I'm afraid I'm no Rogers/McCartney/Porter... my melodies tend to run as dry and flat as my peculiarly displaced drawl... Hopefully no permanent damage will be done to those listening. :D

Oh, and I hope you can pardon a few liberties with the lyrics. I sort of have singer's Tourette syndrome, if you know what I mean. I put the lyrics and chords smack in front of me and it's still a struggle to stick to it. At least no baby's snuck in there.

Below (1st v and ch) are the chords I used in Nashville notation (or my version of Nashville)... I did it in Db...

I like it, or most of it.

I tried playing it with your Nashville chords. My ear kept wandering toward different changes in a few spots here and there. But the basics of the tune are really good.

Wow. You guys have no idea what a thrill this was to listen to not one, but TWO takes on my lyrics. I am on cloud 9. This is so cool. I must admit, neither one of these takes are what was floating in my mind when I was writing it, but that's great. The whole idea here is to get ideas I would never have thought of. I'm smiles from ear to ear. Go nuts, take as many takes as you like. I'm diggin the hell out of this.

And now for something completely different.

My dad got me in to writing songs. He was writing way back when I was a kid. Tonally we are polar opposites. Dad writes syrupy, sappy, happy ending stuff and I am the Debbie Downer of songwriting. I still think he has a lot of talent, and he is far more prolific than I. He also tends to write a lot of female empowerment type songs that most woman born in the last 100 years or so would find down right offensive, or at least condescending. He is from a different time :). I remember playing editor on Stones Throw Away and changing it up quite a bit. I made him throw out one verse completely and some other changes, but my memory isn't what it once was and it never was much. I just remember cringing at a couple spots.

Even though I have been playing at this recording thing for 20 years now, we haven't done a lot together. He'll try to get me to work on something and it's usually just so far removed from the stuff that trips my trigger, I make a couple feeble attempts at it, and it goes on the back burner indefinitely.

I usually get a page of lyrics sung over the same 3 chords he did his last song over. Dad likes country, me not as much. So most of the time it comes out sounding kinda southern rock.

Here are a couple I recorded for him back in 2001 according to the file dates in Sonar. Dad is singing them both. My gear was pretty crap back then, I think I recorded the guitars direct of of the back of a preamp. There is some cheesy vocal harmonizer action going on too.

The first is Stones Throw Away. This is a funny story. We hadn't done anything together in a while and dad was begging me to record something for him. He offered to come down and do a bunch of yard work at my house, if I would work on this song. I played with it a bit, got nowhere and the next thing you know I'm wailing on this Judas Priest sounding riff. I realized that the lawn mower had stopped, I turn around and dad is standing there at the door. I'm thinking I was busted and would have to finish mowing my own damn lawn, but no. Dad says, "that will work, just slide it down in to A and play it a little slower". "Uh, no dad. I'm already playing with an open A string, if I slide it down it will throw the whole riff out of whack. Dad just stares at me. I tried his suggestion to prove it wouldn't work, and voila, it worked. To this day I have no idea how he heard this in what I was playing when he walked in.

As soon as I had the main riff down that we both liked, I got excited about the song and knocked it out in a couple days. It's my favorite of the songs we have done together.

There'll Be You is closer to the stuff dad usually writes, and most people he plays it to like it more.

Dads been wanting to get together to record something again. He's not that far from 70 now, I guess I better stop putting it off.

"Stone's Throw Away" is really good. Love your dad's voice. Love your guitar.

And though on "There'll Be You" there's a bit of a disconnect between his style of song and your style on the guitar, it's still good.

Yeah, I'd say it's time to stop putting it off.

"There's That Moon Again," rough demo, one take.

The tune didn't come out quite the way I wanted it to. If I were attached to the project I'd probably work on it a little more so it doesn't sound so, I don't know, predictable.

I changed the words a little...

Oh, and the "damn" is supposed to indicate happy surprise...

Wow, three versions!

I love what you did with the chorus. You also found a vocal phrasing that works well for the middle verse. I got kind of lost in the Old McDonald-ness of that one but you give it a homespun reading that makes sense.

That was three interesting takes on "There's That Moon Again." Jack, you said none of them were what was in your mind. Can you give us an idea of what you were hearing, maybe a genre or artist reference? I think that one of the ways you can tell a good song is when it holds up under different treatments. So far, this one has sounded pretty good to me in all three versions.
