Members Electric I Posted February 25, 2006 Members Posted February 25, 2006 If memory serves, it supposed to be identical to the Kitty Hawk Quattro. Remember that one? Again, if I have it right, the Quattro was used by Reb Beach when Winger was goin' full tilt. Anyhow, I'm rounding up all the gear I don't use anymore & came across this Soho preamp. It's got 4 12AX7s / 2 channels with 2 modes per channel. Oh...it's a 2 rack spacer & the Quattro only 1 space. Whaddaya know?
Members Robotechnology Posted February 25, 2006 Members Posted February 25, 2006 Post a pic... I want to see it. I have a Quattro (well 2 actually, the Kitty Hawk kind and the Audi kind ).
Members Electric I Posted February 26, 2006 Author Members Posted February 26, 2006 I'll hafta take a pic & post it...

I think the soho was made in korea though, and the quattro was made in Germany. This could be totally false though. I think the Soho is actually built better.
Members Electric I Posted February 26, 2006 Author Members Posted February 26, 2006 Originally posted by guitarslinger I think the Soho is actually built better. It's all coming back to me now... I recall the original Kitty Hawk owners/partners had some kinda falling-out & went their separate ways. I believe both parties had rights to the basic design & the Soho was born. The look is different, but the functionality is the same ( the 2 channels/2 modes thing ). In the user reviews there's mention about the overheating of the Quattro's power supply. That would explain the 'built better' part in that the Soho is 2 rack spaces to let the heat dissipate more efficiently. Pic:
Members OwenD Posted February 26, 2006 Members Posted February 26, 2006 I have a Soho Acoustics QTR-1,i bought it before xmas last year,on eBay,for US$214. I absolutely slays for metal, jazz, clean stuff, rock, blows away every other preamp in my opinion.. but its simple,no midi, which can be a good thing, its gonna work right, every time i turn it on..
Members Electric I Posted February 28, 2006 Author Members Posted February 28, 2006 Wow...good price for a unit that looks in good shape. And yeah, with the 4 modes it can cover a lot of ground. Thanks for the input, everyone.
Members Eightstack Posted February 6, 2011 Members Posted February 6, 2011 I can see that this thread is pretty old but I still wanted to reply in case someone was still looking at opinions. I used to have one and got rid of it only because I needed the money at the time. Now I wish I had it back. Of course it all depends what you power it with. I used an old Crown D150 power amp and all I can say is....NICE!!!! The QTR-1 is a monster....and I never had a problem with it. I believe it was ahead of its time. You could get a nice array of tones and one thing it had was a killer crunch!!! So if you're into rock or blues, this thing is for you!!!
Members OwenD Posted February 7, 2011 Members Posted February 7, 2011 I will add that I wish I still had mine. One thing that bugged me was the shared eq between the 'channels'. If memory serves me right there was only 2 eq's but 4 channels.
Members clemford Posted March 1, 2011 Members Posted March 1, 2011 I was just playing my Soho Qtr-1 tonight and it still sounds wild. I either run it through my Tubeworks RT-4250 w/EL34's or my Peavey 50/50 w/EL84's. Either one sounds great through 1x12 Celestion cabs. I run my preamps through an EQ to fatten them up just a little bit. I really like the sound of this preamp. I'm running 4 jj803's at the moment. The cleans are nice and sparkly and the crunch grits it up a bit.The lead channel roars and the hot adds a little bit more. It's hard to hear the difference between the lead and hot but it seems to have a little more gain on hot. The chassis is a very breathable 2 space made of aluminum. From what I've read about the Kitty Hawk Quattro, which is supposedly the same sound as this, is that the Kitty Hawk had a crappy transformer that shorted out and that the pots were plastic shaft pieces of crap that constantly broke. Probably made by English Fags that had ties to MG's and Lucas Engineering. The Soho is redesigned most likely by Americans and kicks ass over the Kitty Hawk. So anyone that says these are crap must be referring to the Kitty Hawk. Yet the Kitty Hawk Quattro's go for a {censored}load of money with a ton of bids on ebay when they rarely show up .And one of these Soho Qtr's just went for 450.00 on ebay last week. I've read some reviews of a few assholes that said these were garbage and thin cardboard sound. They're probably just remembering back to some of their bad homo days and blaming it on the preamp because this is one of the nicest sounding preamps I own and anyone that says otherwise is full of {censored}.

Members Deadunclesox Posted March 24, 2013 Members Posted March 24, 2013 Reading through this as I embark on my first test run of a recently squired soho preamp. I bought it to see if I could get a nice shimmery acoustic tone from my guitar, but plan on testing it for a bass guitar overdrive through a trace elliot rig. Anyone ever try this?
Members tlbonehead Posted March 24, 2013 Members Posted March 24, 2013 used to have a KH Quattro. Neat little preamp.
Members VagueSubscription Posted May 4, 2013 Members Posted May 4, 2013 $214, it works, fine condition? Great score! Supposedly they are built more reliably than the Quaatro cousins. Sounds like a better deal than a friend of mine got, with a "boutique" D-style preamp. Turns out it was an assembled kit from Canada for 5 times what you paid. I want my overdrive to be analog, effects digital. Analog preamps are a great way to record with a good effects unit. They sure don't take up much space, and when you can snag one for $214, the world is your oyster.
