Members strings4v Posted June 11, 2013 Members Posted June 11, 2013 Thanks for all of your guys' advice, my decision towards an affordable (price range ~$400 ish used) all tube amp comes down to these.1. marshall Haze 402. marshall JCM 2000 DSL 401 combo3. Jet city 22 (20 watts 2 channels)4. peavey classic 30 I like Andy Timmons and Guthrie govan. Amp doesn't have to suit for mid scooped metal. A good amount of low end with thick overdrive (I play instrumental genre a lot) will be a keeper. As far as the conditions go, 0. BANG FOR THE BUCK (OBVI)1. decent clean (please just be better than marshall VS 102R that I own right now...)2, take pedals good (i am a pedal freak) -> FX loop is a must3. at least 2 ch with a footswitch / sperated EQ would be nice but .... i can compromise on that 4. If reverb sounds good, that gets a point5. great overdrive w/ reasonable length of sustain 6. additional tremolo or things like that would be a plus but not a necessity.7. 12 INCH SPEAKER8. emulated output would be good and some power break feature like turning it into lower wattage (not a must though)9. would like to have a presence knob on EQ but my eq pedal can do the job so preferable but not a must10. please consider a resale price... in case I happen to go out and buy Mesa Lonstar of something when i get to be able to afford those. And my ultimate questions are1. Will I better of if I change the amp to a full tube amp like those from Marshall Valvestate 102 R?2. Would I be able to hear myself while I play with a drummer with 20 watts tube amps?3. What is the soundwise difference between EL 34 and EL 84?
Members stratotastic Posted June 11, 2013 Members Posted June 11, 2013 The correct answer is the Peavey Classic 30.

Members Razsan Posted June 12, 2013 Members Posted June 12, 2013 Crate V32 Palominos or the sister version V30 (not the new ones) are wonderful amps and can be had thru GC's used section for under $300. To my ears it was much better on the gain side than the Peavey 30 and also has a REALLY nice clean channel. The only down side is that the amp gets HOT and you need to put a small fan in the back to cool it down. On the plus side, doing that extends the life of the tubes.
Members Steve2112 Posted June 12, 2013 Members Posted June 12, 2013 Judging by your requirements...I would think a Fender would best suit you. It would satisfy the most of all your requirements. They can tend toward needing to be played loud...but if you really are a "pedal freak"...that shouldn't be any problem. Of course the Crate would work okay too. I'd also check Blackstar. Regarding your Marshall...here's a clip I did with the VS100r (1x12 combo) and "pedals":The Storm
